A United States aircrew helped rescue three stranded men from a deserted Pacific island after the sailors used palm fronds to spell the word "help" and waved their lifejackets at rescuers.
A Navy P-8 aircrew based out of Japan and vessels had been searching for the men, reported missing after failing to arrive in their 19-foot craft at the island of Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) to catch an early morning flight on Monday.
Bulk carriers Brilliant Jupiter and Ten Yu Maru were also engaged, conducting 17 hours of search across nearly 300 square kilometres of ocean.
The US Navy crew members, normally based 3,840 kilometres away, spotted the survivors on the remote island of Fanadik and shared their location with relatives, as well as with the searching ships.
A small boat then picked the men up and took them to Pulap in FSM, the US Coast Guard said.
The mariners were back to safety three days after going missing.

Any word about Wilson?
Excellent. Good job, to both sides. Stranded and rescuers.
Just read about the first infantry woman.... Those three dude probably wished one of them was a woman if they had to be stranded on a tropical island for longer than the three days.
Maryann and Ginger didn’t make it? Damn.
Insert Maryann’s coconut cream pie joke here.
Stranded in Paradise!

*Came for the Far Side cartoon, goes away happy*
Beat me to it.
There was a Gilligan episode in which they heard on the radio that astronauts would pass them over from orbit. They cut down palm trees and placed them on the beach, spelling SOS. Gilligan tripped over the last one. Now it spelled SOL which was also the first name of one of the astronauts. They said on the radio they could see it.
Wow! Just like in the movies. Chances are good that there will be a movie, too.
