The Republican establishment breathed a huge sigh of relief last fall when GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump signed a loyalty pledge binding him to endorse the GOP nominee, whomever it is, and precluding a third-party run. At the time, a close associate said the candidate felt hed been treated fairly by the party, which had been Trumps stated criterion for deciding to sign the pledge.
A lot of things have changed since then including both the relationship between Trump and the party and the candidates commitment to the pledge, apparently. As the New York Post reports, the GOP frontrunner is leaving the door open for a third-party bid, should he not walk away from the party convention as the nominee.
Donald Trump is refusing to rule out a third-party bid for The White House.
During a Fox News interview airing Sunday, Trump said he would prefer to run on the Republican line, but left himself the option for an independent bid should the party reject him at the July national convention in Cleveland.
I want to run as a Republican. I will beat Hillary Clinton, he told Foxs Chris Wallace, in an excerpt released Friday.
When pressed on a potential third-party candidacy, Trump added: Im gonna have to see how I was treated [before making a decision]. Its very simple.
A third-party run by anyone has the potential to dramatically alter the general election outcome and by someone with as much staunch support behind him as Donald Trump, its pretty much unchartered territory.
Rivals Sen. Ted Cruz and Gov. John Kasich both were also noncommittal recently about supporting the Republican nominee, regardless of who it ends up being, when asked by Anderson Cooper during a recent CNN town hall.

“Trump created this mess and unfortunately he’s guaranteeing a Rat victory in Nov. “
That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
Is that you Mitt?
Sorry for my typs, new tablet
“Oh, Okay I get it, that’s just like punishing your family by committing suicide, except in this case you would be around to suffer with them. No thank you.”
Alright maybe a bit much, but at least primary the GOPee’s.
I know that I wake up every morning and say ‘boy is my life better since the GOPe gained control of the Senate./s
I was listening to the C-SPAN call in show recently and a black woman called in to say she was supporting Bernie Sanders. She went on to say if Sanders doesn’t get the Democratic nomination, she was going to vote for Trump. She made it absolutely clear she wouldn’t support Clinton or any other DC insider.
One reason why Trump will win in November.
No way no how can anyone say that Paul Ryan could be given the nomination fair and square.
It would be a brilliant move for him to run as a candidate of the Livertarians while pursuing the republican nomination.
That would be a very odd thing to do to someone who doesn't yet have enough delegates to win the nomination, and still may not win it.
The time to rally around someone is after they've won the nomination, not before. Until then, those who don't like him are free to try to knock him off his stride, just as he did to other candidates, in the hopes of nominating someone else.
It's like we're at mile 18 of a marathon, and the guy in front wants to call the race and have himself declared the winner.
(He says with an excellent straight face....)
I don’t believe that will happen.
First of all, they have a plan to set us up with terrible candidates so that we will be relieved when one “halfway decent” comes forward reluctantly. That will be Paul Ryan, who 99% of voters do not recognize for the scumbag that he is (I save that word for especially fitting occasions).
Second, we do not have the cojones to fight a war over this, in my humble estimation. We have been weakened and distracted and entertained to a shadow of what we were two and a half centuries ago.
I suggest that we try our hardest and then leave it up to the Almighty. He may have a plan bigger than anything the GOP can cook up. And he doesn’t favor the unjust.

Romney is not a candidate.
“It’s like we’re at mile 18 of a marathon, and the guy in front wants to call the race and have himself declared the winner. “
No, we’re in a war and our side is shooting at it’s best General.
“Trump signed an agreement to do something, now hes backing off of that agreement. Do you want this man as president?”
Trump, Cruz, Kasich tear up their pledge to support GOP nominee
The 8 state / 1237 number was pushed by Mitt Romney and applied to the 2012 convention. Rules will be developed for the 2016 convention and the front runner will have a say-so as will the RNC. That is how it has worked.
This would actually be better than him being the nominee - get the big government liberals out of the party that loudly cheer for tax increases, increased government spending, attacks on fundamental Constitutional rights, cheer for attacks on conservatives and what we stand for, etc.
They are on the ballot in only 34 states, contrary to what they are telling everybody. And they would be fools to give up all their principles at once like that. Plus the police would be gone if they win.
If Trump runs 3rd party the REPUBLICAN candidate will win the WH!
The reason is no one will get enough electoral votes to win and it will go to the house. The house will choose the GOPee RINO.
Hello Paul Ryan :-(
The way to hurt them is to have his supporters write in TRUMP on the ballot and not vote on the down-ticket races. The threat of this will force them to give him the nomination.
There is a huge number of us that start the day the same way, I prefer the option of voting out the RINOs rather than voting in the full fledged no pretense socialists.
This blind following of Trump just goes to show many of you all are not conservatives - nor were you ever. This past week he blasted Scott Walker for not raising taxes and not increasing government spending and stated among the primary functions of government was the providing of health care, education, and housing. It’s never ending attacks on the American ideals of freedom and limited government from start to finish - and you all just keep on supporting him all the way.
Well sure - they must have hypnotized Trump to cause him to say and do all of those things.
