ABC News ^ | March 31, 2016 | Mari Yamaguchi

The operator of Japan's destroyed Fukushima nuclear plant switched on a giant refrigeration system on Thursday to create an unprecedented underground ice wall around its damaged reactors. Radioactive water has been flowing from the reactors, and other methods have failed to fully control it. The decontamination and decommissioning of the plant, damaged by a massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011, hinge of the success of the wall.

Cover up! The ice wall is to stop a kaiju emerging from the radioactive ground.

The Japanese PM sold this to the public by saying the ice wall will have the added benefit of keeping out the wildlings and white walkers...

A nifty solution for the time being.. Putting it on ice.. Amazing engineering that goes on.. Like Chernobyl.. Cocooned.

In a couple hundred years ya can start cleaning the mess up.. Maybe sooner.

One would think the Japanese, with their love of everything robotic, would go in there with driverless earth moving equipment, tear it all up and put it into containers, then pay a third party country to entomb it thousands of feet down in stable bedrock capped by concrete.

Radiation has already destroyed several robots in the process there.

Low yield bomb? I’m hedging bets as a couple items at the sites will likely be ticklish when handled. Hopefully technologies and safety equipment will advance to accelerate cleanup. And costs don’t go thru the roof.

Motors, oil pumps, hardened steel blades, and tractor treads are virtually immune to high levels of radiation within the time frame involved. It’s the computer/digital circuitry that is vulnerable. So you just harden it by encasing it in a block of lead.

I’m not talking about those little martian rover-like devices they use to pick around and take pictures. I’m talking about a remote control version of the D-9 CATS the Isreali army uses.
