On a cool evening in Madison this past September, Scott Walker courageously faced the music. Recognizing that his campaigns momentum had been irreparably stifled, he gracefully excused himself from the ranks of the Republican nomination contest.
The media and the party were abuzz. Walker was a dream nominee for the Republicans in the general election. A governor in a blue state, Walker defied the intense opposition of the left at every turn. When unions and Democratic leaders railed against him, he beat them. When they tried to remove him with a recall election, he beat them again. When they tried to make him a one-term governor, he beat them yet again. And at a time where cracks were already becoming visible in the Republican facade, Walker was near-universally beloved across every demographic of the party. So why now? The Wisconsin governor made his intentions abundantly clear that evening: the conservative movement had to coalesce around one candidate who could stop Donald Trump.
This explanation, of course, didnt work for the pundits. After all it was September, and there were still months to go before Iowa. Everyone remained steadfastly confident that Trumps campaign was a circus sideshow, an entertaining, reality TV fever dream that we would all eventually wake up from. Something would sink him, be it a scandal, a gaffe, or the Republican electorate simply becoming bored and weary with his antics. But the governor saw the writing on the wall, and he implored the other candidates and his fellow conservatives to see it too.
Walker didnt have to drop out of the race when he did. He could have dug in his heels and declared that only he had the answers to our nations ills. He could have flown in the face of polling and common sense and defiantly lingered in the race until his home states primary next week, where he undoubtedly would have won. Wisconsin Republicans rightfully adore their governor after all. But during an election where our party could not afford egotism and hubris, Walker swallowed his pride and did right by his principles and his country. And on Tuesday, as conservatives nationwide continue to come to grips with a reality foretold by Walker six months ago and attempt to make a final stand in what few remaining primary states we have left, the governor once again did his part by swooping in with an endorsement for Senator Ted Cruz, in a state where he simply cannot afford to fail.
Its unclear what the Republican Party will look like once this tumultuous election cycle comes to an end. But the conservative movement will remain, and at the forefront of that movement should be Scott Walker: the hero conservatives deserved, but not the one we knew we needed until now.
Yup full disclosure: The site is funded by anti-Trump PAC and headed by Eric Schmidt—a rabid Anti Trump talking head...
More disclosure: Walker got money from Ted Cruz supporters when he ended his campaign...Cruz made a special appeal to his supporters to retire Walker’s campaign debt. Guess Cruz was truly and extremely grateful Walker got out and slammed Trump when he did...Endorsement not a big surprise...
Quid Pro Quo...
Yes. Your convenient way of excusing monetarily driven ulterior motives from a (IMO) name dropping idiot’s website bought and paid for with anti-Trump money. Great job.
Scott Walker: the hero conservatives deserved, but not the one we knew we needed until now.
It may not be over for Gov. Walker in 2016. As a Cruz VP or ???.
I was intrigued by him early on. Especially because of CW’s ardent advocacy of him and her defense.
I never ankle bit him except for a couple instances. One in which he had a recorded interview about his thoughts on “pathway” to citizenship for illegals to which he uttered “sure” [somewhere circa 2013 or 2014 which he changed to “no amnesty” after declaring] and then to a much later chickenshit out that involved something about borders first and then ‘talk’ about after - all right before his cronies tanked his finances and he floundered. Never got to afterwards.
I have no idea about his state. If they like him, they can keep him. His endorsement now doesn’t impact me in the slightest.
He said his goal was stop Trump. Not stop hillary. That’s gope.
I liked him in first months of last year, but then his position on immigration and H-1B Visas/Amnesty/Cheap Labor became painfully clear.
I believe initially he was a Patriot, but he started answering to his funders—Chamber of Commerce types...Same thing happened to Ryan—he was so great his first term or two, then he changed :(
But to get money from Cruz supporters when he suspended and slammed Trump was unheard of to me. Now h endorses...No surprise. Obviously, it was a quid pro quo.
Just another reason I don’t like Walker or Cruz.
EGO and self importance and the belief one places in the sycophant praise that surrounds him are powerful, powerful intoxicants. Often enough to derail an honest man from the path they once held..
Thanks....sorry if I seemed hard. We are beset from all sides with lies and motives unseen, apparently.
‘sokay. We are working different sides of the fence and the time will come to get the band back together.
Stopping Hillary is in November. Stopping Trump is now. If you don’t stop trump, you don’t stop Hillary, or you get something almost as bad.
We, who want smaller government can’t risk either.
What conservative?
HEY! I know! Maybe Scott Walker could unite the anti-Trump forces at the convention into choosing him as consensus candidate!
HEY!
No.
