The three friends no doubt thought shooting at an old lawnmower would be a fun way of exercising America’s gun ownership rights.
But packing it with Tannerite explosive beforehand turned out to be a serious mistake when the target exploded in a dangerous hail of flying metal that hit one of the men, causing horrific injuries that cost him his leg.
This footage shows the moment when 23-year-old David Presley is struck by debris from the machine after firing at it with a high-powered rifle at close range.
Mr Presley and his two accomplices in Walton County in the southern state of Georgia packed the lawnmower with 3ib of Tannerite - a binary explosive designed to make a loudly combusting target for firearms practice - before shooting at it from just 14 yards away.
“It went terribly bad from there,” he admitted ruefully afterwards.

It's weird to watch in slow motion. The explosion appears to have two stages. First the bomb bursts, then the shattered pieces of plastic go flying off.

Tannerite would be the detonator and ANFO would be the main explosive.
It takes a high velocity shock to set it off.
A high velocity shock as delivered by a point blank shot from a rifle or a pistol. Remember, we're dealing with Muslims eager to claim their 72 virgins, but it doesn't take much imagination to design a remotely fired rifle/pistol as part of the detonator.
Pistols won’t set it off, you need ~2000 fps +.
I’m surprised the moon god worshippers haven’t done something with it so far, but then again if you need an energy burst your probably going to get a better effect just buying a bunch of black powder or reloading powder...
