Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of Fort Wayne-South Bend said he disagreed with University of Notre Dame officials for honoring Vice President Joe Biden with the Laetare Medal for outstanding service to the Catholic Church and society.
He said Biden's stance of not opposing abortion and his support of same-sex marriage make him ineligible to receive the award.
Biden, along with former Speaker of the House John Boehner, will be honored May 15 during Notre Dame's 171st commencement ceremony. Both men are Catholic.
While not calling upon Holy Cross Father John I. Jenkins, Notre Dame's president, to reverse the decision, Bishop Rhoades said in a lengthy March 14 statement that "it is wrong for Notre Dame to honor any 'pro-choice' public official with the Laetare Medal."
"My principal concern about this whole matter is scandal," Bishop Rhoades said. "In honoring a 'pro-choice' Catholic who also has supported the redefinition of marriage, which the church considers harmful to the common good of society, it can give the impression to people, including Catholics in political office, that one can be a 'good Catholic' while also supporting or advocating for positions that contradict our fundamental moral and social principles and teachings."
The Laetare Medal has been given annually since 1883 to a Catholic "whose genius has ennobled the arts and sciences, illustrated the ideals of the church and enriched the heritage of humanity."
The honor is so named because its recipient is announced each year in celebration of Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent, which this year was March 6.

Rhoades used to be this bishop in this region, the Diocese of Harrisburg.
He was appointed to South Bend after all the controversy and people being arrested when Obama was at Notre Dame.
Jenkins is a god unto himself.
Many clergy in the church are little concerned about about abortion and many support gay marriage. This is all part of the corruption eating away at the Catholic Church.

Having rushed to “honor” O in 2009, notre dame broke all conceivable Christian or moral bounds ( recalling that O’s one and apparently only “accomplishment” in his brief visit at the Illinois legislature was introducing a bill to legalize murdering babies their parents didn’t want but failed in trying to abort prior to birth). There are no lower, more Satanic levels to which ND can sink. Nothing ND does surprises us now. Perhaps a memorial to Hitler? Any parent even remotely thinking of sending kids to ND needs to seriously reconsider - and that definitely goes for any $ support until such time as the school’s administration is thoroughly exorcised of its demons.

In all fairness to Notre Dame, it stopped being a Catholic university years ago.
I a not close the the situation but friends have told us that a bunch of Chicago communist types took over the ND governing board some years ago....and we saw a couple articles detailing the names and extreme leftist “political credentials” involved. I couldn’t find those articles this evening but certainly we do know that ND is not a genuine Christian school anymore....and the ND problem has been around awhile... such as this editorial from 2009:

My only thought is to see ND cleaned up (exorcised of its Satanic demons). I have only good regard for the school and just hate to see it dragged down into the moral cesspool this way. May the Bishop prove able to clean it up!
