New American Air Force museum opening at Duxford air field in England. It is part of the Imperial War Museum and is dedicated to the USAAF and USAF in Great Britain. Definitely deserves a place on one's must visit list.

I’ve been there several times, beginning with my father around 1961-62. Most recently last May.

If you ever get a chance, visit the US Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio. YES. I flew out escorting a friend's kitty cat and stayed in the area for a few days and he's an airplane nut and a pilot, so we went. One of the many highlights was walking through the retired Air Force Ones across the runway at the Annex. Lots of great things there.

I’ve been to Duxford and it is WAAAAAAY cool.
This will only make it better.
And don’t forget the Land Warfare Museum there, to.
And Oxford is just down the road! Save a day to tour there, too!

It’s a reopening. The museum was built back in the ‘90s. I’m a plank owning (small) donor. Funny thing was they sold their donor list to AARP. So I was getting mail from AARP in my 20s. Ha ha.

If I had one of those huge garages you see the guys with all the cool old cars have, I would want a Merlin V-12 engine to tinker with. Just that old craftsmanship to fondle.
Probably never start the thing, but just tinker with it.

Thank you! I will watch it tonight...

I did not know there was a Land Warfare museum there. Thank you for the info. I visited the Imperial War Museum for a few hours back in Jan 1968 on a college tour of European capitols. Unfortunately I never made it back during my Army tours.

There are multiple Imperial War Museum sites. There are three in London - the War Museum at Lambeth Rd., the Churchill War Rooms, and the HMS Belfast.
At Duxford there is both the Aircraft Museum and the Land Warfare Museum. IIRC, you can (for a fee...) even drive tanks at the Land Warfare Musuem.
The Duxford air museum tries to restore their aircraft to flying condition - unlike the Smithsonian. It is probably the only place you can see a flying Hurricane, and they have a De Havilland Dragon Rapide that you can purchase a flight on.
Outside of the IWM complexes is the Royal Armoury museum. It has been moved out of the Tower to a museum at Leeds.
One very sad thing I encountered there was a nasty strain of PC. For curators of weapons museums, they are rather anti-gun.

I went to one of the war museums in London - the one with the enormous naval guns in front.
There was a virulent strain of political correctness running through the place. I wore my USCGC Munro cap and got odd hostility from a visitor and an employee, I guess because folks thought I was in the military.
It was several years ago but I remember how out of place that behavior was. It’s a war museum for goodness sake.
