Wow. Overnight, Microsoft forced updated a "Security Setting" on my computer without my permission. I had updates turned OFF on purpose and NEVER turn it on. I use my own anti-virus protection and it works beautifully. How do I turn off Microsoft's Anti-virus protection (Windows XP)?
lulz.....I thought Microsoft stopped updating XP a few years ago.
They updated mine last night on a “Security Setting”.
Maybe it wasn’t Microsoft
I think they’re trying to update mine Windows 7 (which I didn’t even want to get less then 2 years ago) but there’s hardly any blank space on my flash hd so I don’t think they can do it.
F Microsoft.
Turn your computer off at night.
That is the only way to ensure that no “stealth” updates occur while you sleep.
Local Security Policies.
MS owns you.
That doesn’t work. MS tried (and failed) to update my computer last night at 9PM, while I was using it.
Microsoft hasn’t released any new updates for XP in over a year. I guess it might still apply old missing updates but I am not even certain of that given that none of clients have any XP machines left.
Local security settings sounds like something else. Your end point security software needs to be current on threats. You will still be exposed regardless of your operating system to threats in the wild. In addition Internet Explorer in XP has a couple of serious security holes that remain unpatched. I would never allow an XP machine on the internet.
The older machines probably can't handle anything like Win 10.
XP does not get the free Win 10 upgrade. XP machines have to pay for a new Win 10 license. What you see is at most some kind of sales pitch nagware, if it is from Microsoft at all.
Windows XP came out in 2001.
Microsoft has not pushed anything to XP in almost two years. It’s dead.
Your System has probably been compromised for years. It ain’t Microsoft stirring in your system at night.
I’m normally not in favor of class action lawsuits, but Microsoft deserves one over this.
I have two old Win2k laptops that I use for electronics design, and I never go on the internet with them.
For that, I use an iMac. :)
I occasionally have some quirky things going on with my Win7 desktop. When I try a system restore, I notice that the last install was a Windows Critical Update, usually a day earlier.
I have Win Updates turned off, too.
After the system restore to ‘before the critical update’, things seem to work again.

I do NOT like forced updates of any kind, because MS has a history of releasing updates that mess up computers.
A year or so ago, one of their updates killed certain Dell laptops. Luckily, I had updates turned off on my Dell laptop.
And regardless, the computer (hardware at least) is your personal property, so they have no right to do ANYTHING to it without your affirmative knowledge and consent. Besides, hacking into other people's computers is against the law now.
Not possible. Microsoft literally removed the update channel for XP. Not sure what you got, but it wasn’t from MS. And if you’re using XP, I’d bet good money it’s not good. You REALLY need to get off of XP!
