Rock star Keith Emerson killed himself because he feared he was no longer good enough as a musician, his girlfriend exclusively told The Mail on Sunday last night. The 71-year-old founder and keyboard player of Emerson, Lake and Palmer was 'tormented with worry' about upcoming concerts in Japan because nerve damage to a hand had affected his playing, said Mari Kawaguchi. She found Emerson's body when she returned to the apartment the couple shared in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, early on Friday morning. He had shot himself with a gun he kept for protection. 'Keith wasn't feeling well on Thursday night. He had bronchitis so I tucked him up in bed,' said Kawaguchi, 52.

He’s a sad,sad little man.
I was always partial to his amazing arrangement of “America” from “West Side Story.” On a lighter note- did you know that Keith Emerson collaborated on the movie score for “Godzilla: Final Wars”?
Here's one his compositions, which always struck me as a perfect soundtrack for B-17s assembling in the skies over the Channel. This is close enough:
Lot’s of people can’t “meet expectations” as we age-—but we don’t kill ourselves.
He obviously had other problems.
.
Yeah!
F everybody else who have to clean your brains off the walls.
Shooting yourself sends a horrific message to someone.
He made a lot of great music. I saw ELP live at Jenison Fieldhouse at MSU shortly after they released Brain Salad Surgery. They were awesome.
I’m sorry my post came off so harsh.
I do not only come on threads to say horrible things about dead people.
This is not the first thread about his death and I said nothing on other threads. My reaction is to his suicide, which I did not know until this thread.
I said in the deleted post I thought it was sad and it is a waste.
I’m not sure how anyone can disagree with that.
I do not have sympathy for suiciders. I have anger. (Sadness as well for the loss).
I said nothing personal about him and did not attack him for any personal things except the decision to suicide.
I did comment on his public professional life, saying I did not think. ELP’s music was good.
So Lee, yes, I didn’t like their music. I think a lot of excellent musicians, technically excellent, often have poor taste and make mediocre music.
My wish would be less people kill themselves, even if they make lousy music or great music or whatever they do in life.
Wow! I can maybe move my fingers that fast, but not in any meaningful way. Many decades of doing that. Can you say carpal tunnel syndrome?
Unless there was some other external event; given the way he played, I’m surprised he made it to 71 without feeling the effects.
“did you know that Keith Emerson collaborated on the movie score for Godzilla: Final Wars?”
No, I do not. Very interesting.
In ‘69 Keith was still with The Nice. ELP wasn’t formed until 70. Their BSS album was from around 73.
awful....he had kids....that’s something to live for. Having come from a family where suicide happened....it’s not the way to go...it affects generations.
“Good for him. Too many people let themselves grow old, batty and crippled, ending up in assisted living or nursing home prisons. Emerson knew his limits and what he wanted to do with his life and when he could no lnger do it he did what was right for himself.”
Says it all. The soulless Godless anti-life worldview.
Not surprised you are a March 2016 Trump sign up.
You say “good for him” when he kills himself.
I say, it’s sad and a waste and my post gets deleted.
I really disliked bands like Yes, ELP, Rush, Styx etc...
I never understood their appeal. Sounded too often like atonal un melodic random notes.
It’s interesting how people hear things differently.
NO offense taken, at least not by me. You have a right to express your feelings about any music. Those who were big fans are likely to be more sensitive right now, and jump on anyone who doesn’t reflect their long held opinions. Since the dawn of this year 2016, we are losing so many big names so very quickly.
Many folks never really got into other trends of the day either, such as The Beatles or Motown, or dare I say, Disco.
Affects generations, ,,Yes.
Sad.
What do You Like?
We’re all Waiting ,,,
Looking back, I see Motown as being generally a notch above.
I was in high school in the late 70’s and never liked all the pop music of the day. Led Zep were huge.
I did eventually like the Beatles and listened to their records.
I liked Al Jolson and Louis Armstrong and Paul Robeson.
When punk came around, it was the first contemporary music I liked. Clash, Pistols, Ramones and myriad other bands that never had worldly success.
Now I like anything good of any genre.
If I had a satellite radio I would mainly listen to Outlaw Country channel.
“Its interesting how people hear things differently.”
Agreed - those are my top three bands! Can’t stand Styx - but replace it with The Doors and you have my top four! (Although in my world it is Rush, ELP, Yes, The Doors).
Hey - it takes all kinds! And I can easily see how they are not liked by some.
