Free trade is again under attack, despite having been, for over a century, the basis of America's wealth. Some groups in the United States blame free trade for the loss of manufacturing jobs, while others blame it for exposing some U.S. producers to foreign competition.
Free trade, however, is good for America, and for a very simple reason: It allows American workers to specialize in goods and services that they produce more efficiently than the rest of the world and then to exchange them for goods and services that other countries produce at higher quality and lower cost.
Specialization and free trade allow the U.S. to become more competitive and innovative. Innovation constantly provides new technologies that allow Americans to produce more, cure more diseases, pollute less, improve education, and choose from a greater range of investment opportunities. The resulting economic growth generates better-paying jobs, higher standards of living, and a greater appreciation of the benefits of living in a peaceful society.
New technologies bring about change, which, as U.S. economic history shows, benefits society as a whole. In the process, however, some sectors suffer until they can adapt to the new changes and begin to benefit from them. Today, Americans are experiencing some of that "suffering" because new technologies are challenging old methods of production.
This change is especially visible in the manufacturing sector, just as it was in the agricultural sector 100 years ago. But in the same way that it adapted then to a new, more industry-based society, America will adapt again to a new, more knowledge-based society.

We need free trade so that Communist China can continue to build its military and so that we can pay for it.
Trading dollars for goods is not equal when trading with Communist China. Gimme the dollars anyday and you can have all the crap I sell you.....because the object of the game is not to get resources, its to get money....that’s what you work for, money. You build things so you can sell them for MONEY. You save up your money and you can buy anything. You can save up all the TVs and other crap and you can’t buy with that....you can only hope to sell it for a profit so YOU CAN HAVE MONEY.
CHINA IS GETTING MONEY. WE ARE GETTING CRAP.
Its trading dollars that buy Communist China more nuclear weapons and U.S. in return getting underwear, TVs, ties, cell phones, tractors and on and on made by slave labor, using no pollution controls. NOT EQUAL AT ALL.
WHEN THIS COUNTRY WAS GREAT WE DID NOT HAVE A TRADE DEFICIT!!!!!!
but we did (While fighting a World Wide Cold War, a Hot War in Nam, fighting the democratic regressives at home) have a Space Program that put TEN MEN ON THE MOON.. something the entire earth all together has not even come close to doing even with 30+ years of more modern technology.
..that is what you call greatness......hint.
FAIR TRADE YES. FREE TRADE WITH COMMUNIST CHINA ...HELL NO
VIVA TRUMP
You and many, including Trump who I support, fail to address the factors suppressing our GDP. Protectionism and tariffs utterly fail to address the core issues that cause business and industry to flee our country. Protectionism and tariffs layer more government upon what government has caused to begin with. Same as it ever was.
You seem to not have sufficient respect for the work of finance and banking. You perhaps feel they are sucking money away from the laborers and those who produce goods and services. Your post reminds me of a commie-type post as your attitude toward venture capital and finance seems like a commie attitude.
