China and other countries want to sell me goods at a cheap price. Trump wants to put a stop to that in order to appease the visible victim, the angry unemployed widget worker. The invisible victims are much greater in number and any tariff or "fair trade" is awful for them. Who in their right mind complains when something is getting sold at a cheap price?
It is time to put America first and stop Trump from increasing the price Americans pay for foreign goods.
I might agree with this if the foreign goods were any good. Walmart sells cheap junk. Just bought a toaster there for 16 bucks and it’s a rickety piece of crap. Wonder how long it will last?

Everyone benefits from “free trade” - the sellers and they buyers.
Raising tariffs protects inefficient industries and raises the price of goods. More people in the economy are hurt when tariffs go up than are hurt with low tariffs that can displace some workers in select industries.
The problem is that trade is often not “free” and is not always fair. Dumping occurs when a country sells product for less than it cost to make it. Dumping is a serious problem that disrupts supply chains, domestic industries and displaces workers. Trade deals are supposed to protect domestic economies from dumping practices but need to be aggressively enforced.
Trump is only partly correct in his view on US trade deals. The US has negotiated good trade deals because our tariff structures are comparatively low, and we get more tariff reduction for our exports to other countries than other countries get in tariff reductions for their exports to the US. Historically (up to and including NAFTA) the US has made some good deals, and then aggressively beats countries over the head when they fail to comply. Trump’s criticism of US trade policy may be more valid when focused on the crony capitalism that Obama ascribes to. The scope of TPP, for example, goes beyond “trade” into other areas of the economy, so the value of TPP is suspect. We all know Obama does not favor deals that enhance or strengthen the US position in the world economy. Since Obama is apparently motivated to knock the US down a few notches, Trump’s criticism of current US policy has validity.
What we have is RIGGED TRADE , and not true free market trade where everyone is playing by the same rules.
We pay tariffs to China and they don’t.
The manipulate their currency too in order to make it harder to sell them goods.
It’s like paying a rigged poker game. There is simply no way we can win.

Here’s the simplicity of it:
—$500 billion ANNUAL trade deficit with China
—When this is balanced, by tariff or by voluntary changes in China, one of two things will occur:
1. The goods are built here (iPhones, or whatever); or,
2. Something else is built here and sold back to them.
SIMPLE, eh?
In the meantime, the tariffs that are paid are a tax that can be used to bridge the gap for MUCH LOWER CORPORATE TAX here-—the additional CARROT to bring back our jobs.
You are beating your head against a block wall and will find very little sympathy here for your views on trade.
But you are basically correct.
You could also easily predict that a Trump Presidency will have very little impact on world trade. He will attempt to impose high tariffs. He may or may not succeed. If he does fewer people will buy new 4K HDTVs. People will grumble. Our Enemies, the countries we export to, will raise tariffs on our manufacturing goods. World Trade will slow. Employment will continue to stagnate. We will blame everyone but ourselves. Things will go on pretty much as they are now except for the increase in the Grumbling Index.
When everyone is umemplyed, Eintein, there will be no welfare due to no taxes. Then how will you afford the cheap shit from China? Think long term.
I am saying don’t compete for some products. The American economy doesn’t need to be focused on producing all products. This is what specialization and its associated efficiencies is all about.
Financial industry, high tech industry, some agriculture too...let the world have the rest.

My Mom was not so lucky. When she was growing up, the wizards of smart in congress passed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Protection Act to protect US workers from this cheap foreign labor. The result? Foreign governments passed reciprocal tariffs to stop cheap US imports. The result was The Great Depression. Thus, my mom, as a child, had to go to bed hungry many nights because her widowed mother could not find enough work to put food on the table.
Beware economic lightweights who think tariffs will solve foreign labor costs. President Kennedy had it right when he said (of the world economy): "A rising tide lifts all boats".
