Saving the GOP Might Mean Backing the Guy You Don’t Love (and I’m Not Talking about Kasich)
National Review ^ | March 11, 2016 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 03/11/2016 9:37:20 AM PST by detective

The so-called Republican establishment is coming to the painful realization that Texas senator Ted Cruz may be its only hope to block Donald Trump from winning the nomination and Hillary Clinton from winning the White House. It’s not assured, of course. There are as many theories on how to emerge from this year’s Republican convention with an acceptable nominee as there are interpretations of what was going on in the TV show Lost.

The title said they don’t like him. The first line in the article said they were supporting Cruz to stop Trump. I shortened the quote because I did not want to quote several paragraphs. I linked to the article so everyone could read the entire piece if they wanted.

The point is they don’t like Cruz. Yet because they are trying to get people to support Cruz Goldberg has to write something positive about Cruz. What is telling is that in an article trying to convince people to support Cruz they fell the need to include such negative descriptions of him.

“They forced McCain and Romney on us, and they tried for force Jeb on us...”

More and more it’s looking like Jeb was just a decoy, or at best an alternative candidate for Ted, if this article by Diana West is an indication of how deeply Ted Cruz is embedded in the Bush clan.

What Does Bush Inc Bring Besides Money?

Just when we thought our fellow Americans, voting in droves in the early primaries not for Jeb Bush, had prevailed through the ballot box against the rigged wheels and multi-millions of the permanent insiders of Bush, Inc., we find that Jeb Bush’s finance committee has attached itself, leech-like, to “outsider” Ted Cruz.

And vice-versa.

On March 3, eight former members of the Jeb! team joined the Cruz campaign:

Paul Dickerson of Houston, TX
Boyden Gray of Washington, DC
Charles Foster of Houston, TX
Reginald J. Brown of Washington, DC
Paula and Jim Henry of Midland, TX
Nancy and Randy Best of Dallas, TX.

If there was any doubt that the Bushes were back on the trail, five days later, along came Neil, the Silverado-Asian-call-girl-Billy-Carter-by-way-of-Kennebunkport-bad-news-bailout-brother of Jeb and George W., who once upon a time found himself in the semiconductor business with the son of the former dictator of China, Jiang Zemin. Now he occupies a top slot in the Cruz organization.

Beck cost Cruz but Cruz cost Cruz the most. He just does not come across as a “real” person. Just a lawyer.

Not just a lawyer, but an elite Harvard Lawyer Graduate!

How do Elite Harvard Law School grads feel about average American voters like us?

Goldberg doesn’t like Trump and is always going to post that straw man ,”He can’t beat Hillary” . In the first place, Hillary is busy beating herself and while Barnie may not be able to beat her The Donald can and will.

I don’t like the Harvard pedigree either (how many of those clowns have been in charge for how many years and we’re in the mess we’re in now?), but I do agree with Romney’s quote there.

Who needs to save the GOP? What good are they? The GOP as we know it needs to go.

This is one of those times like when one of your friends makes a statement and waits for everyone to agree with them, but there is that uncomfortable silence that in fact no one agrees.

The GOP of today is like an NFL team that never gets into the playoffs year after year. The players get complacent and comfortable cashing their big checks, being the big men in their little town, and think the fans will keep buying tickets.

“The only good thing I can say about them is that they are holding the line..so far..on the Scalia replacement issue.”

Lets hope they continue to hold that line!

The Harvard Pedigree goes back for decades on both sides.

JFK and many of his minions were Harvard Law school and Harvard Grads.

Other Ivy league schools produced people like the Clintoons.

Last election, the GOPe forced Mitt on to the party. Conservatives were told to hold there nose and vote for Mitt.

Now the shoe is on the other foot and the GOPe does not like it.

The Cheap Labor Express and their minions in the Ministry Of Propaganda are really desperate to prevent the citizens from electing a President who will stop the illegal alien inundation.

Yep.

What caused Ted to go full on crazy and find someone even worse than that to tie his campaign to?

Sounds like the Former Niners with their wonderful new management people.

I can’t think of a reason I would have a goal to “save the GOP.”

(Cruz is) arrogant and condescending, a terrible listener and completely uninterested in actually getting anything done that doesn’t further his own interests.

Flattery like that is why I support Cruz as my top choice. He is completely uninterested in actually getting anything done that doesn't shrink government back toward its constitutional size - as delineated in the enumerated powers. He doesn't think that can be done all at once, but he is working to move in that direction. Cruz has also been personally responsible for stopping FedGov from growing even faster than it has under the communist thug from Indonesia/Kenya/Hawaii/Chicago.

Trump is (probably) more electable, but I have never heard him use the phrase "enumerated powers". I am confident that Trump is not going to support some of the shockingly stupid things that Jeb/Rubio/Christie/Kasich wanted, and that's enough to make him my second choice. But is Donald Trump really a small government conservative?

There are some people who can never reach acceptance. Jonah Goldberg is one of them along with Bill Kristol and Steven Hayes. The GOP primary is all over but the weeping and Trump is going to be the nominee but they just can’t stop themselves. Its getting pathetic.

“Flattery like that is why I support Cruz as my top choice.”

That's fine with me. I also like Senator Cruz.

The purpose of the post was not to attack Senator Cruz but to show that the National Review is only supporting him to stop Trump.

I think Senator Cruz is their second to last choice. Trump is their last.

But the NR would much rather be supporting Jeb or Romney rather than Cruz.

“False premise. Why save the GOP?”

Their goal is to stop Trump.

But they also want to claim they are saving the Republican Party.

The real goal is saving the country. Either Cruz or Trump can do that in my book. I support either.
