I believe my beloved little cat has cancer
3/8/16 | Me, Myself & I

My little cat Kefira has been very sick for the past few days. She is losing muscle mass, developed a pot belly, and barely eats anything for the past couple of days. She spends her days just laying Sphynx like on the floor, upright like the Sphynx. She is drinking lots of water. Blood tests show normal except for an extremely elevated white count. This points to a likely lymphoma. Vet had extra blood tests done to identify any cells in blood.

I am taking her back to the vet to discuss results of cell blood test.

Chemotherapy is not very effective in cats. It usually only buys a few months.

If the vet tells me it's lymphoma, would you just have her put the cat down and not put her through anything else?

If those are the symptoms, put her down. There is no point in dragging out her pain. I love kitties (we have six now) & watching them hurt when there’s nothing you can do is agonizing. Prayers for you & your kitty.

Prayer for you. I lost my beloved cat, Rooster, last year.

Nearly killed me.

We just lost a kitty that was having the same symptoms. The Vet advised to have him put down. It’s very hard.

I am so sorry for your cat.

I have a cat with cancer, but it has been controlled by surgeries over the last 5 years. He recently had a tumor of a different type removed.

I will not subject him to radiation or chemo, neither of which are very effective in cats. If the cat reaches a point where the cancer makes it miserable and painkillers are not effective, it is time to let go.

Again, I am so sorry. You really need to find out the diagnosis, treatment options and the prognosis (maybe an infection, maybe cancer). Only then can you decide what to do.

My beautiful little dog came down with cancer last fall.

She was in pain so we had her put down.

A pet will not understand chemo. It is hard enough for a person to deal with.

The best thing you can do for your beloved pet is to avoid any suffering and have her put down while you hold her and whisper goodbyes into her ears. It is also one of the hardest things you will ever do.

Thanks, guys. Of course I did internet research about this. About the symptoms, prognosis, success rate of chemo (only brings about remission, not cure, and only for a few months), etc. And chemo is expensive, although if it promised an absolute cure I’d find the money. But it doesn’t. My friend Gitty is coming with me. Appt. at 5 p.m. Poor Kefira doesn’t know this might be her last day. I feel horrible.

read Mark Levin’s book about his dog, Sprite...

Rescuing Sprite: A Dog Lover’s Story of Joy and Anguish

its wonderful, will make you cry but it is healing...

I gave a copy to a friend who counsels veterans and he lent it to his “clients” when they lost a pet..

he got great feedback ...

I’m a dog and horses and indoor outdoor cat man

I agree with two tone

Off to dreamland chasing all the mice or moles you can and all the salmon mousse you can eat is far better than suffering and suffocating

I’m sorry

Losing pets is trying times

First see what the vet has to say.

My cat has been doing something similar, although she does not have the pot belly. I took her in for blood work and nothing unusual was discovered aside from an existing kidney problem.

It could be excess stomach acid or constipation. They will sit that way when uncomfortable.

Prayers for you and your cat. It is terrible for us when they get sick.

If she is in pain then there is no reason to prolong her life.

Humans however can understand the redemptive aspects of pain for themselves, but a poor little kitty cannot.

I am very sorry.

Please be sure to go back to the vet, as you are planning to do so anyway.

I know one thinks the worst , but there are other possibilities, please ask the vet — it could still be something curable. Check things out before doing something irrevocable. You need to be sure one way or another.

Best wishes to you and your kitty.

Parasites and potassium deficiency can also cause weight loss and elevated white blood cell counts , so it might not be as bad as it sounds.

I am so sorry to hear about your cat. I lost my cat to cancer 10 years ago. His cancer was in the nasal passage. I took him to Cornell’s veterinary clinic, and they did all sorts of tests on him. I opted not to put him through chemo and radiation treatments because I wanted his final days to be as peaceful, and comfortable as possible. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think of him.
