A jury awarded $55 million to Fox Sports reporter Erin Andrews in her lawsuit against a Nashville Marriott hotel on Monday.
Andrews sued the hotel alleging it acted negligently when allowing a man who was stalking her to book the room next to hers and surreptitiously film nude videos of her in 2008 while she worked for ESPN. The stalker, Michael David Barrett, posted the videos online and pleaded guilty to stalking charges, for which he was sentenced to 30 months in prison.

So did the hotel really know this guy was stalking her when they booked his room? How would they know? I don’t get how the hotel is culpable.
I fail to see how the hotel is culpable to this criminal act. Can someone explain that to me?

I don’t know what was proven but it was alleged that hotel employes gave dates of stay and arranged for him to have the room next door where he drilled peep holes.
Since there are multiple incidents of this happening, I would say that it was no accident.
The latter two don’t necessarily translate IMO to negligence
Now the hotel revealing what room she was in, yes
But I agree with the aboves, the award is vastly excessive. Sure she’s humiliated and I feel for her, but as someone pointed out, people get much less for much more injury, including disability and death.

They had culpability, yes, but $55M worth? Our hotel bills have just gone up to pay for additional liability insurance no thanks to Erin.
Just because the judge and jury awarded $55mm, doesn’t mean that the hotel will pay it. Remember the old woman who spilled hot coffee on her lady parts sued McDonalds. Well McDonald never paid and was secretly settled.
