Chinese woman found dead after month trapped in elevator

A Chinese woman died after being trapped in an elevator for a month because maintenance workers shut off the power supply after failing to properly check if anyone was inside, state media reported today.

Workers came to repair a malfunctioning elevator in the northern city of Xi'an on January 30, Beijing Youth Daily cited local authorities as saying.

The crew found the elevator stuck between the 10th and 11th floors, shouted to ask if anyone was there, and cut the power, it said.

The workers left for the week-long Lunar New Year holiday and did not return until March 1.

The government said the investigation found the death was due to a grave error by the maintenance company for not opening the car before cutting the power, and not verifying after the power was off whether there was anyone inside.

Wow, what a way to die.

Starvation, dehydration, lack of oxygen/sheesh.

Bizarre! I will never approach an elevator the same careless lighthearted way again.

Socialism at work . . . ok so they weren’t working for a month but they did eventually get around to it. Vote for Bernie or Hitlery.

I dunno about the escape hatch, but they shut off power, which eliminates the other two.

Reminds me of the movie ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS in which a murderer is trapped in a stalled elevator, Teen age hoods steal his car and go on a crime spree.

then there was the power plant I worked at. The construction crews thought it was great fun to load the elevator full of people, then half way up all jump up and down at the same time causing the overload breaker to trip. This cause us to have to run up stairs to the breaker box and reset the breakers.

It came to a halt when, one day, the construction workers pulled that stunt, and were left in a hot elevator on a very hot day, for about two hours while we went about our other jobs before happening to pass by and resetting that breaker.

What a sad way to die, you’d think there would be an alarm and an escape hatch. It’s amazing to me, all the lengthy holidays in China. And they just shut down completely. Try getting anything out of there during CNY, you can’t.
