A blind woman has regained sight following a controversial stem cell treatment
Science Alert ^ | 29 FEB 2016 | BEC CREW

Essentially, the 'traditional route' of lab-to-animals-to-clinical-trials takes too long, Weiss says, so he figured out how to game the system and start testing his new treatment on his own terms.

The catch is that stem cells aren’t classified as a drug - they’re extracted from a patient's body, go through very little processing, and are used on that same patient, so Weiss was able to bypass FDA approval to register his NIH trials. He did need approval and oversight from an ethics review panel, and got his from the International Cellular Medicine Society, an independent, pro-stem cell therapy group based in Nevada.

So Weiss, who is practicing independently of any university or research institution, is now free to charge around US$20,000 per patient to perform his stem cell treatment, and offers no promises of a cure to his patients.

What is controversial about adult stem cell treatments? That they put the lie to fetal stem cell research?

So, taking cells from aborted babies is not “controversial” but using your own adult stem cells is, because the FDA and Big Pharma doesn’t get a piece of the action?

What a world.

These are adult stem cells taken from the patient’s body. The only “controversy” is that he sidestepped the FDA who would rather his patients remain blind.

Wonder if he'd take another patient. I got a set of lungs ...

Pneumonia took about 80% of my breathable lung surface in 2009. Would LOVE it if I could even get about 5% restored until a better job could be done.

Have to stop and catch my breath after about 30 ft because of it.

I was reading up.on something similar for those with Alzheimer’s here in Phoenix except it is not incurable and the cost is 7,100. My sister has early onset of dementia and I would do it in a heartbeat if insurance would cover even half of the cost.

My aunt has macular degeneration. I will email her (in large letters) the article.
Right below that article is one with Bill Gates. The one who advocates killing babies and sterilizing women in Africa using adulterated vaccines as he thinks there are too many people on the planet.

One who brings hope (the doctor) and another who crushes hope.

Question: I have been wondering, if the use of stem cells from someone else (ie:Na fetus) require a person to take anti-rejection drugs for the rest of their life? While using a person’s own cells would not require anti-rejection drugs?

Generally speaking that is correct. When foreign cells are introduced into a body your immune system acts like a cop asking for identification. If the ID of the new cell is not accepted, your immune system will attack it.

Stem cells taken from your own body have the proper credentials. That is why they are not rejected.

Cancer cells are “seen” as belonging, so they are not attacked.

If it as a real chance of working, I think it would be worth doing even if her insurance covered none of it. Maybe you and your entire family need to re-order your priorities. Is there any material thing in the world worth more than giving your sister’s mind back to her?
