The Best Indoor HDTV Antenna (Cord Cutters Alert)
The Wire Cutter ^ | 01/25/2016 | GRANT CLAUSER

Posted on 03/01/2016 11:31:29 AM PST by Kid Shelleen

After spending more than 20 hours attaching many antennas to multiple TVs in two different testing locations (one suburban and one urban), watching way too much daytime programming, and compiling objective data from a signal strength meter, we think the Antennas Direct ClearStream Eclipse is the indoor HD antenna with the best combination of features for most users.

The big ole outdoors antenna on a 30ft. pole with a signal amplifier works for us to get out big 4 stations (with their respective substations). We get it rigged all up and use it for 10 years and then find we don’t watch tv anymore. Streaming web is about all we do.

It’s worth reading the article if you are in the market.

There was a lot of testing of antennas.

I think you might have better luck with a antenna that can be aimed.

Don’t be suckered by some claim that an antenna is “digital” or “digital ready” of any such rot. Pure snake oil, any given antenna will receive digital and analog TV signals equally well.

If you are within 10 miles of the broadcast towers a indoor (amplified) antenna will work.

But out side that range an outdoor one is much better.

I bought this one called 'Able Signal Amplified HD Digital Outdoor HDTV Antenna' on Amazon for $35 and put it on a pole outside the house. (it rotates too.)

If you live more than 60 miles from a broadcasting station, an HDTV antenna is a waste of $$$.

Your only choice is cable, satellite dish or Internet streaming service.

An HDTV antenna works great in an urban or nearby suburban area for signal reception.

Good luck.

I dropped cable TV Saturday. Comcast bumped the cost $26/month and couldn’t explain it other than the price of my bundle went up. They also noted another $5/month increase is coming in March.

So I’ve had this antenna in the attic for years: http://www.amazon.com/Winegard-MS-2002-Antenna-without-Cable/dp/B001DFZ5HO

I connected it to the splitters that were channeling the Comcast TV to my 3 TV’s. I get 87 digital channels. Granted, only 37 of them are in English or non-religious (I live just north of Houston).

This saves me a little over $100/month - but best of all, none of my money is going to all those left wing crap channels..

I did keep the broadband and I think I made the Comcast retention person cry.

First I recommend an outdoor antenna. If an indoor antenna is a must, I recommended the Terk HDTVa model, it has multiple UHF elements and a single “rabbit ear” for the VHF signal. The “a” is for amplified. This, like most antennas, is directional and you will need to aim it at the broadcast antenna (tower) for maximum signal level. TV Fool and Antennaweb will provide a location graphic.

My antenna is the Channel Master Advantage 100, with an amplified splitter. From my location with the antenna about 7 feet above my house, I can reliably receive signals as far as 70 miles away.

He started getting whiney when I didn’t want him to run through all the channels I’d be missing out on. It was pretty sad. I am not kidding.

It’s probably held against him that he failed to retain me at any level. But screw their ‘bundles’, let me choose what I want to watch. And screw their 2 year contracts and all their nickel and dime charges.

Hopefully, another Melissa Harris Perry wannabe is slightly closer to losing their job.

Several years ago, I bought an amplified antenna - it works great.

Then when we were all required to get the digital converter boxes, they just changed the labeling on the box - the amplified antenna became a Digital Antenna!

I think they saw a business opportunity - the digital signal is more ‘all or nothing’, and people who had previously tolerated a little fuzz with their rabbit ears would now get no watchable signal...and the amplified antenna fixes that problem...so the antenna addresses their ‘digital’ problem, even if its still the same old antenna they’ve sold for years.

We have this Terk antenna in our den and are underwhelmed.

I cant imagine where a person with an ordinary ceiling would put it. Ours is on top of the kitchen ‘’roof’’ deck/ mezzanine because the ceiling above it, the den, and the living room/ dining alcove is 22 feet.

Even with a large, flat area to move it around, reception isn’t at all for some network channels. DH has to get the stepstool about half the time and move it around.

I dropped cable TV

You can enhance your entertainment choices if you have Internet service and smart TV or a Roku box.

Thus my recommendation first for an outdoor antenna.

We’re trying SO hard to avoid that.
We don’t watch enough tv (oldies channels) for it to be worth it.
