The Albatross of Having Endorsed Trump
National Review ^ | 2/28/2016 | George Will

Posted on 02/29/2016 6:58:09 AM PST by LouD

Donald Trump’s distinctive rhetorical style — think of a drunk with a bullhorn reading aloud James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake under water — poses an almost insuperable challenge to people whose painful duty is to try to extract clarity from his effusions. For example, last week, during a long stream of semi-consciousness in Fort Worth, this man who as president would nominate members of the federal judiciary vowed to “open up” libel laws to make it easier to sue — to intimidate and punish — people who write “negative” things. Well. Trump, the thin-skinned tough guy, resembles a campus crybaby who has wandered out of his “safe space.”

Trump is a presidential aspirant who would flunk an eighth-grade civics exam. More than anything Marco Rubio said about Trump in Houston, it was Rubio’s laughter at Trump that galled the perhaps bogus billionaire. Like all bullies, Trump is a coward, and like all those who feel the need to boast about being strong and tough, he is neither....

“Not true, the SCOTUS has determined that they can libel away as long as there’s no malicious intent behind it, and of course we know that liberals always have good intentions.”

If memory serves, didn’t Carol Burnett and Richard Jewell sue and win ?

NAtional Angst? Is that what it is? Angst? Like a lonely teenager? This is a time of National Peril, my friend. The enemy is THROUGH the gates. The constitution is not and never has been a suicide pact.

You’re not advocating a President Trump go around the Constitution and Congress to “get things done” are you?

It is always proper in FR to ping others when you are talking about them.

So, I will do that for you and give them a chance at rebuttal, you know that is just the only fair way to do this.

Justice Scalia, "It should have been debated in the New York Legislature and the New York Legislature could have said, 'Yes, we're going to change our libel law. 'But the living constitutionalists on the Supreme Court, the Warren Court, simply decided, 'Yes, it used to be that ... George Washington could sue somebody that libeled him, but we don’t think that's a good idea any more.'"

So you think the Constitutional confines of the 1st Amendment should NOT be restored ... how is that supporting the restoration of our Constitution? How is that stance a 'conservative' one that is supposed to be about restoring the 'first principles' of our nations founding fathers?

Sigh.

I’ll ask again. And please don’t hide behind Scalia or the Bible. Just answer the question.

Who do you want to be in charge make sure reporting is “responsible?”

Me? I’m happy that the American people are the ones

Will is no conservative.

And I’m going to enjoy watching him melt down completely when Trump wins the nomination.

Tea Party? Ask Tea Party Senate candidate Sharron Angle about Trump's contributions to Harry Reid against her in the 2010 election cycle, when we were trying to beat ObamaCare. The Tea Party was founded to support the Constitution Republic - and I see little evidence Trump agrees with that objective, and considerable evidence he does not.

Not sure about Carol Burnett’s case, but I don’t think Richard Jewell was a public figure, which means that the original libel laws would still apply.

I am not a fan of George Will and did not read his column. I don’t need Will’s advice to know that the alleged Conservatives will come to regret supporting Trump when there is a true conservative in the race.

Even if Trump was able to appoint Justices to do what he wants regarding defamation, Trump would still lose every defamation case he’s been involved in since the truth is an absoute defense.

Trump’s number of wins in defamation cases = 0
Trump’s number of losses in defamation cases = All of them.

What part of integrity in media do you not understand? Without integrity, the 1st Amendment means nothing ... oh, wait, that is what we have now ... the 1sty Amendment has been usurped and you can’t even see it!!!

Can you just answer the question???

I’m asking who do you want to oversee “press honesty”

Just answer the question. I know the press is dishonest. So do many other Americans. But I still haven’t gotten an answer from you to whom or what do you think should enforce a responsible press.

One answer. That’s all I ask.

IT didn’t fizzle, it did what all oppressed and suppressed peoples do, it went underground and bided its time, waiting for its opportunity. Perhaps this is the sleeping giant awaking. I pray it is so.
