“We live up in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, and I don’t think he’s seen a vending machine before so he saw the Oreos, and some biscuits and a few other things,”

Arnhem Land is a very remote, rural region located at the very northern tip of the country. It has a population of about 16,000 spread across 37,000 square miles.

I guarantee that kid will never stick his arm in a vending machine again. LOL!

Hydrox cookies were what you ate only if there were no more oreos.

Kids can be stupid. And probably their parents too.
Remember the kid who crawled into a Claw-stuffed animal vending machine?

Today, though, Oreos out sell Hydrox by 50X or more.

Undoubtedly "more": Hydrox was discontinued in 1999, and [Wikipedia] "Leaf Brands began production of Hydrox cookies on 4 September 2015...".

It’s just that Australian culture seems to churn out low class white people.

It’s a sad dynamic, but readily apparent.

I like history, and in reading about the behavior of Aussies in WW2 it becomes clear this behavior is not a new thing.

Sure, but they also did a lot of bad stuff.

For instance, that time the Australian mainland was attacked by japs in WW2 (Darwin), many townspeople fled inland, only to return hours/days later to find mass looting of homes over large parts of town. Many of the perpetrators were their own military police.

I worked on a large EPC project being built in Aus for several years. It was an $8 billion plant on an island near Gladstone, north of Brisbane.

The Aussies we worked with were laid back - TOO laid back. If something needed to be done immediately, there was always next week. It was a repeating theme that played itself out over and over. My boss called it “Institutional laziness with smile”.

They kinda acted like they couldn’t be fired, as if they were related to the boss, or something.

Writ large I attribute this to culture. They tolerate behaviors that my community would not have tolerated.

” That’s an average of 2.18 deaths a year, making this cause of death WAY more likely than shark attacks.”

This source has about 10 per year for sharks.
