The number of manatees in the waters around Florida have reached a new peak of at least 6,250, conservationists said Thursday, a record reflecting years of efforts to protect the marine mammals.
The count is up slightly from the 6,063 spotted last year, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a statement, citing results from surveys conducted by 11 organizations.
Last month, the US Fish and Wildlife Service proposed downgrading the manatee's status from endangered, a designation given to species on the brink of extinction, to threatened. ...

The shark migration is perfectly normal for this time of year. The manatees are mostly found in the inland canals this time of year.
I guess global warming must be good for something after all.

Years ago we were canoeing on a river in Florida when something gave the canoe a big bump. Looked over the side and there was a manatee drifting right beside the canoe. It stayed with us about an hour. The best canoe trip ever.
I was fishing on Okeechobee on Friday and a manatee came up beside the boat. First one I had ever seen so far from the coast. Very curious creature and seamed to be so very vunerable. Not 200 yards down I spooked a gator. Didn’t seem to be compatible creatures but I guess so.
