Donald Trump says he would like to release his tax returns to the public, but just can't.
"I'm being audited now for two or three years, so I can't do it until the audit is finished, obviously. And I think people would understand that," the Republican front-runner said at Thursday night's Republican debate in Houston.
The Internal Revenue Service and tax experts, though, say he can.
"Nothing prevents individuals from sharing their own tax information," IRS spokesman Anthony Burke said in an email.
Audits aren't out of the norm for someone with Trump's wealth, legal experts say, and there's nothing to stop Trump from making his tax returns public.
"He's not legally prevented from disclosing tax returns publicly. There's no prohibition on that," said Georgetown University tax law and policy professor John Brooks.
"He probably just doesn't want to," Brooks said.
“I am trying to wake people up.”

NO CANDIDATE, Dem or Repub, has disclosed their tax return.
If you were being audited by the IRS, would you want your returns made public so all your enemies and trolls can make accusations and point out descripencies for the IRS ? All conservatives should stand for the abolishment of the IRS Gestapo.
FWIW Mark Levin said on his show last night that anyone who releases his tax returns whiles he’s under audit, is crazy.
You just open yourself to all sorts of problems.
The explanation he gaves has been shown to be bogus. There is no legal reason he can not do it. Trump opened this door, now he needs to walk through it.

Trumps' matters of personal convenience are irrelevant to me. I don't care what his attorneys are telling him to do. There is NO LEGAL REASON he can not release those returns. He is asking to be hired for the most important job in the world. As his prospective employer, I want to see what he has been up to.

They always demand EVERYTHING which is considered private from republicans, but NOTHING from democrats that should be public.
I wouldn’t put out my tax returns until the devious IRS is finished. Otherwise you release and if they find an issue you look like a BusTED liar.
Well, can’t help you with that.
It would have saved a heck of a lot of time if he would just release them, than staging that faux scene. But all is showmanship, a pic is worth a thousand words and proof positive he is an honest person.
