There were no sea level gages. They divined the ocean levels from tree rings just like they do with CO2.

The oceans are rising by 0.002 inches per year which is far faster than the 0.0005 inches per year 2800 years ago. On the other hand, I visited the Pilgrim’s Plymouth Rock recently and it does not seem to have changed level over the last several decades
