A couple of years ago, a Bloomberg Politics Poll asked the public a good question about the deficit: âIs it your sense that this year the deficit is getting bigger or getting smaller, or is it staying about the same as last year?â It wasnât even close â despite the fact that the deficit, in reality, was shrinking quickly, only 6% of the public knew that. A 62% majority said they believed it was getting bigger, which was the opposite of the truth.
Two years later, Al Hunt flags the results of the new Bloomberg Politics Poll, which offers some good news and some bad news when it comes to the publicâs recognition of reality. âA quick question about the deficit â which is the difference between what the federal government spends and what it takes in in taxes and other revenue each year. Over the last six years, do you think the deficit has been getting bigger or smaller?â
Bigger: 73% Smaller: 21% Not sure: 6%
The wording of the question is slightly different than in early 2013 â this time, there was no option for those who believe the deficit is roughly the same size â but at least in this poll, the number of people who are correct has grown. So, too, is the percentage of Americans who are wrong.

Deficit smaller. Debt still blowing the roof off.
Public debt is 19 trillion and growing!!!
Well it’s not shrinking anymore. It shrank after the sequester but now it’s going back up.
Phew! I guess all is well now, the country is back on the right track! Well I guess we don’t need Trump any longer. /s
And what the hell did we get for the $10 Trillion? A new Panama Canal? A Hoover Dam? A trip to the moon? A decrease in poverty?
Eff DC!
People see the word deficit and think debt.
It’s the debt that matters.
I don’t expect the American voter to understand that.
The deficit is not shrinking. CBO came out last week and said revenue was down and the deficit was projected to grow.
Exactly.
The debt is shrinking just like we have 4.9 unemployment!!!
How in hell do they claim that the deficit is getting smaller? Based on WHAT? The 2 budgets that have been used since obama took over?
How in hell can you figure the deficit, when you have no budget to base it on?
D**n those conservatives! They screwed things up again!
