I'm a history buff, especially when it comes to Texas. A pal of mine told me I should read this so I bought it a couple of years ago I guess, just got around to reading it this past fall. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
The Comanche were the only true horse warriors. Other tribes rode horses to the battle, then dismounted and fought on foot.
“Remember the Alamo. That siege started 180 years ago today.”
A day we ought to remember...
Yeah, but being part Cherokee, I ain’t a big fan of Andrew Jackson....
Weren’t the Arapaho good horse fighters?
I read Empire two years ago at my nephew’s recommendation. I agree that it’s a very good book. It filled in an area of history I knew little about.
It’s a fascinating book. I also have read a couple of books written by people that were captured from their homes as children to go live with the Indians. They liked living with the Indians after awhile for many reasons. I believe the book I read was called “Captured” Very interesting.
Understood and respected. I am a student of spirituality. I focused primarily on Oglala, Black Elk. I know this goes against your People, but it gave me a focused way to understand, kola.
It was a way to get a glimpse with only one language. No disrespect intended. Both Comanche and Apache are respected People and warriors.
I’m not bad either.
Thanks.
I do. It lasted 13 days. Goliad was next, and then San Jacinto, on 21 APR 1836. John Coffee Hays, who went on to cofound Oakland, CA, passed on 21 APR 1873, San Jacinto day.
God bless Texas.
No problem whatsoever...Thank you for your statement...
I agree...God Bless Texas...
If I had to live somewhere other than Tennessee, I’d hope it would be Texas....
Elmer Kelton was born and raised on a west Texas ranch, son and grandson of west Texas ranch managers. He graduated from UT in journalism, wrote for a San Angelo newspaper, wrote Texas history with fictional added characters, and won seven Spur Awards. He is a Son of Texas.
I’ve learned some of TN. Fall Creek Falls Park, Nashville, The Hermitage, and Mr. Daniel’s distillery. I have made the pilgrimage twice. If I didn’t live in Texas, I’d find a place just east of 252B on I-40. You know, just east of that country restaurant. ;-)
That is a bit west of me...My mom and dad’s farm bordered on the Smoky Mountains Nat’l Park...I moved to Greenback which is south of Knoxville near the Little Tennessee River (now Tellico Lake)
Thanks for the excellent reference. Yes, the Indians were brave and always fighting each other and decimating the buffaloes. And the squaws were not treated very well. Indian braves were a handful for courageous American soldiers.
I recommend Life Among the Indians by John Nelson and Harrington O’Reilly. Nelson has great stories and accurate views of Brigham Young. Nelson saw how the Feds in D.C. siphoned the allowance to the Indians which is heart breaking. Nelson also helped the Mormons travel from Illinois to Utah and was so thankful to leave when done. The things Nelson saw are so sad: murder of apostates, stealing from believers, and utopian dreams from King Brigham. Wow.
