I'm trying to understand FR's embrace of the Donald, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this one. I too had a favorable first reaction when I heard him talking about building the wall in absolute terms, and his rejection of the concept of amnesty for illegal aliens. I also admired that he was the first politician in a long time that would fight back against the media and left-wing attacks, instead of trying to appease the left. However, that admiration quickly wore off when I researched Trump and found clip after clip of the man, in his own words embracing every liberal talking point in the book. Planned Parenthood, gay marriage, abortion, government health care, protectionist trade policies, increasing taxes on businesses and the most productive. Of course, the man has taken the opposite positions on most of these two. Sometimes he will take both sides of an issue in the same discussion. Also, his "I'm awesome at___________" is wearing a bit thin. I want to hear what you plan to do, not how great you are. Then there is his child like temper, calling anyone he doesn't agree with , Liar, Pu@@Y or worse. Just seems kind of juvenile. The personality quirks I could live with, but a man who praises Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry and Hillary Clinton is another thing. And perhaps most important of all, he has said that his uber liberal sister would be a great Supreme Court Justice. Other than being a recent convert on Immigration this man has no conservative bona fides and yet have of FR acts like you would expect this board to react if Ronald Regan had returned. I just don't get it. If Bernie Sanders starts lobbying for the fair tax and runs for President on the GOP ticket would the Trumpets start feeling the Bern.
I can easily turn your comment right around on Cruz. On top of that, Cruz has no crossover appeal. How is he going to win anymore states than Romney did in 2012?
Why do I like Trump? It’s simple. He’s an outsider. He snubs his nose at every single person in the GOPe and media. He talks about issues that matter to me. I agree with every policy paper he has produced on his campaign website. He doesn’t take shadow Super PAC money that will result in God knows what bank or open borders group calling in favors after the election.
I want the Washington gravy train to end.
Look, the GOP has totally FAILED to run against Obama and the Democrats for something like what, more than TEN YEARS now. The frustration of the average law-abiding, tax-paying American, of no matter WHAT color, is off the charts, since we are the ones PAYING for all of Zero’s big ideas, whether it be Obamacare, or “minor children” who need to cross the border, whatever. For the GOP to totally ignore that those of us who comprise the backbone of the country or shall we say the TAX BASE of the country is stupid and ignorant. So don’t blame those people for the rise of Trump, who at least APPEARS to champion the average American’s cause. Privilege? What privilege? The middle-aged middle-class American is PAYING for everyone else to express THEIR privilege — and this cohort is LEAVING AMERICA IN DROVES — yes, the proof of that is in my email inbox, great Americans from old families giving up on America and moving to Switzerland, yep! And Chile! Imagine....
about 60% of those believe that a belligerent attitude, rather than principled conservatism, is the tool to bring it down.
You are very wise, HoustonSam. Conservatives would do well to ask themselves am I aligning with people who want to see conservative change, or with people who’s goal is simply rioting against the establishment. Rioters will get Hillary or Bernie elected.
LMAO! Me? An elitist??? Now that’s funny!
If supporting the ONLY conservative in this race equates to, in your mind, me being an elitist, well then so frickin be it. Then again, that’s just your mind making assumptions.
You underestimate the cult of personality. Obama had the same effect. People like being on the winning team. It may be the wrong team, but it’s a winning team. We’ve grown away from recognizing the white/black hat westerns. Those were the days when you knew exactly where you stood. (Sigh)
You are willfully ignorant, then. There have been at least a half dozen scathing biographies of Hillary that would curl the hair on any objective seeker of truth. Crimes and stuff that borders on the incredible.
Not a single one has been challenged in court, and one the constants of Hillary is her absolute determination to destroy anyone and every one who dares to challenge the Clinton Criminal Enterprises, beginning in the 70s.
Guess you never heard of the "politics of destruction?" The "**** them" as a response to challenges to illegal or criminal behavior?
If you ever read a few of her biographies, and still support her politically for ANY office of trust, you would have to slink away in embarrassment.
All based on crimes she has committed in the past, and escaped indictment, not for what she might do in the future.
Pretty well sums it up. I am finding that breaking my long time FR habit is not as hard as I anticipated. It's a big internet out there.
“This is not an election about who can check off the most boxes on a conservative policy list.”
that’s what these critics of Trump don’t seem to get. They think that someone like Cruz with the most artfully fabricated “conservative” voting record should get the FR nod.
the problem is that Cruz is part of the DC “conservative” vote fakery, just like the rest of them.
Two examples:
Nuclear deal with Iran, Cruz voted in favor of the Corker Bill which created a 2/3 majority requirement to stop the Iran deal. Then Cruz bravely votes against the Iran deal and says it is the worst thing ever.
Fast Track, same gambit from Cruz. He votes for it when the outcome was in doubt, then later he votes against.
Cruz = FAKE Conservative.
Look, Trump has my support. Not because he's gonna be a great conservative ala the Limbaugh, Levin or Buckley. It's because he's a pragmatic moderate.
You misunderstand me. I do not support Hillary, I am just telling you my opinion of what will be the result of a Trump Republican nomination. I agree with all you have written about Hillary. Sorry for the confusion.
You say I’m throwing insults while you do. If disagreement with your statements is anger in your book, I get it now. Control... Which explains much.
His positions have been in print for decades. The positions on his web site are not written in sand, but concrete, with no change (or legalese word parsing).
So who exactly DO you support? Let’s hear it.
Sometimes it's necessary to hit you back with what you're spitting out, just so you know what you're spitting out. If you read what I responded to, you'll see I just held up a mirror.
Sad that the Trump phenomenon makes it necessary to defend Reagan’s conservatism. That’s how Trump keeps winning. Anyone who questions him is vilified and accused of some evil or another.
That’s odd/funny. That’s not what Cruz sez about his tax plan. You been reading the NY Slimes again? Or just being dishonest? (or both)
“American revolution; itâs time to reignite growth in our economy. And the best way to do that is through fundamental tax reform. Cruzâs Simple Flat Tax abolishes the IRS and replaces the byzantine tax code with a simple, fair tax.”
“Under the Simple Flat Tax, the current seven rates of personal income tax will collapse into a single low rate of 10 percent. For a family of four, the first $36,000 will be tax-free. The Child Tax Credit will remain in place, and the Simple Flat Tax Plan expands and modernizes the Earned Income Tax Credit with greater anti-fraud and pro-marriage reforms. As a result, the Simple Flat Tax will ensure that low- and middle-income Americans have greater opportunities â not only through minimal taxes, but also through better, high-paying jobs that the Simple Flat Tax will generate. Under the plan, deductions for charitable contributions and mortgage interest payments are preserved.”

I’ve been called a Trumpanzee and a Trump Chump too but this “cult of personality” thing is ridiculous. If had to list all the reasons why I am voting for Trump, “charming personality” would be at the bottom of said list.
I’m curious what party you would have supported if Trump were not in the race.
