There must be something about Trump
Vanity

Posted on 02/21/2016 3:21:29 PM PST by NavVet

I'm trying to understand FR's embrace of the Donald, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this one. I too had a favorable first reaction when I heard him talking about building the wall in absolute terms, and his rejection of the concept of amnesty for illegal aliens. I also admired that he was the first politician in a long time that would fight back against the media and left-wing attacks, instead of trying to appease the left. However, that admiration quickly wore off when I researched Trump and found clip after clip of the man, in his own words embracing every liberal talking point in the book. Planned Parenthood, gay marriage, abortion, government health care, protectionist trade policies, increasing taxes on businesses and the most productive. Of course, the man has taken the opposite positions on most of these two. Sometimes he will take both sides of an issue in the same discussion. Also, his "I'm awesome at___________" is wearing a bit thin. I want to hear what you plan to do, not how great you are. Then there is his child like temper, calling anyone he doesn't agree with , Liar, Pu@@Y or worse. Just seems kind of juvenile. The personality quirks I could live with, but a man who praises Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry and Hillary Clinton is another thing. And perhaps most important of all, he has said that his uber liberal sister would be a great Supreme Court Justice. Other than being a recent convert on Immigration this man has no conservative bona fides and yet have of FR acts like you would expect this board to react if Ronald Regan had returned. I just don't get it. If Bernie Sanders starts lobbying for the fair tax and runs for President on the GOP ticket would the Trumpets start feeling the Bern.

Trump also supported TARP, the auto bailouts, and the Obama/Reid/Pelosi "stimulus".

Yep. And he has given a great deal of money to candidates who pushed for the opposite of what he says he believes.

I’m not from Cruz’s side, and I didn’t insult anybody. But the fact remains, Trump’s candidacy is one of anger, he makes a lot of bold statements, most of which are impractical in the long run, but they get people stirred up. As a political campaign it’s not bad, we’ve known for a long time that kind of talk can get lots of people nodding their heads for prolonged periods of time and highly profitable to sponsors. The big question is: just which of the many many versions of Trump will actually be president? And unfortunately anybody that thinks they know the answer is lying to themselves. This is a guy who has held every possible position, continues to flip around fast and often. I’ve got a bet that he’ll actually switch parties again within the next 4 years whether or not he wins. Because that’s his pattern.

But he speaks to your anger. So you’re voting for him. Good luck with that. He very well might win, but that doesn’t mean he’ll do a single damn thing about any of the issues that make you angry.

” If Bernie Sanders starts lobbying for the fair tax and runs for President on the GOP ticket would the Trumpets start feeling the Bern?”

No, because Sanders is a gutless wimp who would surrender to every enemy !

And that goes for all of the WAshington candidates, regardless of their “conservative’ record.

You would have hated Reagan for his political timeline, too.

That is an interesting statement, one which I had not before researched. According to the obviously unbiased NPR (SARCASM, FOLKS!!), here are selections from Reagan's timeline:

1947
Elected president of the Screen Actors Guild for the first of five consecutive terms, Reagan testifies as a friendly witness before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. The hearings result in the blacklising of many writers and directors thought to have ties to the Communist Party.

1948
Reagan supports Harry Truman for president.

1950
Reagan campaigns for California Democrat Helen Gahagan Douglas in her bid for the U.S. Senate against Richard Nixon.

1952
Reagan campaigns as a Democrat for Eisenhower.

1956
Reagan campaigns as a Democrat for President Dwight Eisenhower's re-election.

1960
Reagan campaigns as a Democrat for Richard Nixon for president.

1962
Reagan officially changes his party registration to Republican.

Oct. 27, 1964
Reagan gives a television address supporting Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater. The speech, called "A Time for Choosing," launches Reagan's political career.

1966
Reagan defeats incumbent California Gov. Edmund G. "Pat" Brown in a landslide.

1968
Reagan makes a tentative run for the presidency, waiting until the Republican National Convention in Miami to announce his candidacy. He later joins in supporting nominee Richard Nixon.

1970
Reagan is re-elected California governor.

1974
For several months after his gubernatorial term ends, Reagan writes a syndicated newspaper column and provides commentaries on radio stations across the country.

Nov. 20, 1975
Reagan announces his candidacy for the Republican nomination for president.

1976
He loses the Republican Party's nomination to Gerald Ford, but a strong showing sets the stage for Reagan's election in 1980. In the meantime, Reagan works on his ranch, gives speeches, does radio commentaries and writes a weekly newspaper column.

Nov. 13, 1979
Reagan announces his candidacy for president. After winning the party's nomination, he chooses George Bush as his running mate. The platform calls for "a new consensus with all those across the land who share a community of values embodied in these words: family, work, neighborhood, peace, and freedom."

Nov. 4, 1980
Reagan is elected president in a landslide victory over incumbent Jimmy Carter.

So, starting in 1952, Reagan began consistently supporting Republican candidates. When did Trump quit supporting Democrats?

In 1962 (10 years later), Reagan officially changed his registration to Republican. When did Trump change his registration ... the most recent time? April 2012, right?

In 1974, Reagan writes syndicated newspaper column and radio commentaries, consistently for conservative policies. How many times has Trump changed from liberal to conservative and back again on policies?

In 1979, Reagan announces his candidacy for president on a solidly conservative platform. That is 15 years after changing parties and after 27 years of consistently supporting Republican candidates.

I remember supporting Reagan back in 1975, just months after his gubernatorial term in California ended. I was satisfied back then that he was consistently conservative, even though there were a couple of questionable laws that he signed. We did check him out, and his more than 20 years of consistent conservative views won us over.

Trump has changed back and forth from conservative to liberal how many times over the past 27 years?

Contrary to your assertion, we did check out Reagan, and we did choose him even though he did not have a spot-free record. His consistent commitment to conservative principles won us over.

I’ll make it REAL EASY for you:

The PRIMARY function of the federal government (arguably the only function) is to PROTECT its citizens from outside attack. Any candidate that can promise that with credibility will win, if NONE OF THE OTHERS have that credibility, and they don’t, then they cannot beat that guy - and none of the other issues will help them.

Bush: Amnesty, Anchor Babies only from China
Rubio: Gang of Eight
Cruz: H1B’s, the video of his so-called poison pill testimony
Walker: Wall on the CANADIAN border
Carson: Had his own issues
Most others: Spent their time calling Trump racist for wanting to protect Americans.

So, sorry, you can add up ALL OF THE OTHER ISSUES and be better than Trump on every one - but if Trump comes across as the only candidate serious about PROTECTING AMERICANS, he wins.

So a bigger question you should have is why was protection of Americans SO UNIMPORTANT to ALL of the other candidates?

I’ll let you work on that for a while before answering.

Yeah, I know there were Republicans who supported the bailouts and stimulus. That’s when the conservative base became determined to start throwing out the RINOs. Still doesn’t explain why conservatives would now support Trump, the biggest RINO/CINO of them all, we supported all those things that made them so pissed off in the first place. It makes no sense WHATSOEVER! Cruz makes sense. Trump no so much.

I’m fluent in Spanish, but I’m not interested in trying life in Cuba. In fact, I’ve been practicing Cuban cooking for years so I can throw a party for my neighborhood when Fidel Castro finally dies. My son is going to paint “Fidelito es Muerto!” on the street.

If you are trying to imply that running a business is like running the nation, you're severely misinformed. And if Trump were so great at running a business, then why the four corporate Chapter 11 bankruptcies? Why were they even necessary if he is so great, so terrific, so brilliant at running a business?

The massive ignorance in this statement is staggering. Every single one of your sentences is wrong. Wow.

One answer:

Trump is the ‘Hope and Change’ candidate for white, middle-class, working folks who’ve seen their version of America flushed down the toilet under a steaming mass of illegal immigrants.

And, those of us who are circling the drain are grasping for any sort of handhold even if it’s a self-aggrandizing pig throwing an imaginary rope.

And no, I won’t vote for Trump but I will vote against the democrat candidate.

In all seriousness, why do you believe he will build a wall? On live television he accused G W Bush of lying to get us into Iraq. He then spent three days telling live interviewers that was not what he said. Why do you think his statements on building a wall are any more believable than his statements on Bush? I will happily acknowledge that Trump supporters are right about one thing. Trump is smart. He knows very well how easy it is to fool and recruit disaffected Republicans.
