DENVER (CBS4) – It's a sign of just how strong the winds blowing over Colorado were as a powerful jet stream passed overhead.

Just after 7:30 p.m. on Thursday the weather station on Monarch Pass recorded a wind gust of 148 mph.

Rather breezy - if you want to experience some air movement, go to downtown Juneau, Alaska on a clear winter day and enjoy what they call the Taku wind. They are actually katabatic winds caused by high pressure air seeking warmer air down slope of a mountain, in this case towards saltwater.
The local Indians warned the first settlers about it, but there was gold nearby so they didn't care.

I thought it was always that high - I remember driving back east through the Rockies from Seattle in 1968 after separation from the Army - heading downhill in my Volkswagen Beetle with the wind coming toward me and the pedal to the floor - doing about five miles an hour - almost gone with the wind....

I think the National Weather Service has to verify the calibration accuracy of the weather station that recorded it.
