What is Apple worried about? That the government will keep the encryption key?

This looks bad for Apple all the way around.

Apple changed their IOS so that they no longer CAN comply. In previous versions, Apple could unlock the phone - they no longer have that ability.

No, not the encryption key, because Apple doesn't have it and won't have it. Apple doesn't want the government to have any means to unlock all iPhones, which is what they are after.

There is a difference between unlocking a phone FOR the FBI and GIVING them the software to do it. From what I read yesterday the FBI wants the SOFTWARE to do it.

What are the chances of that SW being spread around the government like a dirty picture?

If they have a court order, the blessing of the real owners of the phone (the county), and can unlock the phone FOR the FBI, I have no problem with it. Otherwise, no sale.
