We see tremendous push from government for Apple to facilitate back door access to encryption on phones. This apparently to crack the terrorist's iPhone to find out who are their contacts, etc. This appears to be excuse to bypass privacy of phone users under the guise of security. Feds were ignorant to traffic around the terrorist's house. Now the phone is the key to find out who are their contacts? What does the phone reveal that records at the service provider, log of phone calls, doesn't? Where is the NSA and their records and alerts of possible terrorist activity? I can see record of my phone calls at Verizon, time and phone numbers and messages. GPS tracking programs show history of movement of cell phone, don't need the encryption off phone. Smells like another big lie from big brother in order to gain control of citizen's privacy. What happened to Hillary's private server and communications covered by NSA???
It destroys the chain of evidence. The government can not document what is being done to the phone to get the data, therefore no court on the planet will allow that data to be used. Only if the government does the hacking and retrieves the data itself can they claim to have a clear chain of evidence. There is no “compromise” that involves the government not having possession of the phone.
It’s stunning how many idiots just believe the Feds without question when they say they “need” something for “national security.” Why didn’t the FBI do surveillance of this known radical mosque, or the Boston Bombers’ one? Why did they clear this San Bernardino female terrorist who has known ties to a radical Imam? I don’t care if they get the cell phone number of the head of ISIS, it’s not worth them getting access to every iPhone in America,
Ahhh,, but they are camels with badges, sworn to uphold truth justice and the American way .. Or sumthin.
Maybe they’re just looking for the magic Apple of SillyCOn Valley. Its no big secret how many secrets and patents it holds.
Apple, hold that line. Don’t cave in, the investigators do not need access to this. If they want to find out who these people were talking to, do the legwork.
Tim should tell them to shove it.
“No, ordinary Americans donât have to worry. “
There is nothing on the phone that they can’t get from other means. They want a back door so they can snoop on ordinary Americans, who should jealously guard their liberty, freedom, and privacy. Wishing to preserve ones God given rights and freedoms does not equate to support for terrorism. Asking Americans to give up their freedom and privacy because government is incompetent and lets terrorists kill us is not reasonable, in my opinion.
Yes, Americans should worry.
No, what they are asking is worse. They are asking Apple to create a new version of iOS that removes the safeguards against brute-force hacking, load that update on the phone, and then give the phone back to the government to hack.
Once given back, the government will have the firmware necessary to downgrade the security of ANY iPhone, and even do so remotely. They aren’t asking for a backdoor; they are asking for an entirely new iOS that they can use at their leisure. Comes pretty close to involuntary servitude.
It would be like a judge ordering me to construct a set of lockpicking tools in my basement for the government to use on my neighbor’s front door, simply because I helped him hang the door. At that point, there’s nothing the government can’t order you to do. You can’t be opposed to Obamacare and be for this... it’s the same principle...
Carrier pigeon or pony express.. The message . and the motive of the message sender remain the same. Matters not.
Technologies may change.. Agendas don’t.
Moron, the old if you aren’t doing anything wrong you don’t need privacy argument? How idiotic.
Maybe this is too complicated, but does it bother you that the same exact people who tell us moslems flooding the country are no problem, are the same exact people who are telling us they need access to our phones to keep us safe. .... from moslems?
Bullshit. Don’t break out my windows and steal my TV then stop by and try to sell me some iron bars for my windows.
Ain’t irony wonderful?
They government wants to force apple to write a program and engineer a system to overcome the security features. That’s like getting a warrant to search a safe and demanding the company who built it come help you break in.
They dont want to go to courts and get warrants.
They dont want anyone else knowing who they are prying into. For any reasons, good or bad.
As I understand it, FedGov want to force Apple to create a new IOS that can be installed on a locked phone that will defeat the security feature that blanks a phone out after so many failed passcode attempts. Since most phones are encrypted using a 4-digit passcode, with the security feature bypassed, repeated attempts starting at 0000 and ending at 9999 will become the work of hours. Even 16-digit encryption is doable.
The big problem is that once Apple provides the bypass IOS, every time some law enforcement agency wants into a phone they’ll simply ask a court to order Apple to provide them with the bypass code. Already they are talking about “organized crime”, “child porn”, and lots of other crimes that a phone might have info about. They have been wanting this power for some time and this case is a perfect one to try to force the issue.
If they are successful, we Americans will have a bit less freedom and a bit less privacy, which appears to me to be a growing trend.
Grey area. Lots of people pay part of the bill of a company smartphone.
You sound like a liberal big brother govt loving troll. And you signed up two weeks ago.
Th guy signed up only 2 weeks ago. I smell troll.
Agreed, Metadata is already in their hands. They know exactly who those two psychos called. The same FBI that let he Tsarnaev brothers back in, who let in this terrorist woman who shot up San berdoo, is suddenly desperate to identify terrorists?
Hell, on her Facebook page that woman posted that she was a terrorist. Howzabout we start right there?
Maybe if the government actually kept the damned terrorists out of the country, they wouldn’t have to go begging for cellphones.
It was the county government who issued him the phone to conduct county business. Same rules apply here on public records laws as Hillary’s emails.
We can’t be hypocritical.
