My visit to India...long ago...was my first visit to a Third World country.The first morning after my arrival in New Delhi,the capital,I walked out of my hotel only to see a guy squatting (relieving himself) by the side of the road.

One of the things I liked about Istanbul was that there were lots of mosques, and every mosque had public restrooms. For the Turkish currency equivalent of a US quarter, which you paid to the attendant as you entered, you could relieve yourself in privacy. I did a lot of walking around the city, and never had to worry about what to do when the urge hit.

At the time it never occurred to me to wonder whether they had restrooms for women, and I still don't know.
