I’m afraid Peyton Manning is about to find out the same thing, he’s going to wish he hadn’t come back after his neck surgery.

At 59, most people can’t really “run” like they did in their 20’s.

So many good football players also had the option to play professional baseball. Frankly, you’re nuts to choose football over baseball if you had the choice. Imagine if Bo Jackson just stuck with baseball.

The odds might be marginally better in the NFL as compared to MLB. However MLB has guaranteed contracts and slightlt less complete body wear.

Jeff Samardzija is the most recent that comes to the top of my head for choosing baseball over football.

I ran a 20K in Frankenmuth in 2001. A 71 year old man was right behind me the entire time. He was waving at all the bystanders and announcing his age and how he runs it every year, while I was barely able to breathe. Toward the end I just waved at him as he passed me.

Sonny Bono found out the hard way that not everyone can ski until they’re 70.

At 72, I have to say that God has been better to me than I deserve. I still play rec basketball 2 to 4 times a week. My left knee is arthritic to a small degree, my right a little less, but they bother me more while running more than a couple of miles (repetitive motion) than playing ball.

Leonard Marshall of the NY Giants probably had a lot to do with it:

Michael Kennedy was only 39.

As long as Mr. Happy is good, I’m good.

My father is 65 and he's pretty active. Fortunately, he never played football growing up.

This is what Joe Montana said, “Unfortunately,’’ he said, “most of us leave this game with things that linger.’’

Not sure when football will cease to exist but it probably won't be around in 20, 25 years.

Sure, there might be some form of football that will still exist, but it will be more like boxing today. It will no longer be a mainstream sport played by millions of Americans (flag football doesn't count).

Some middle-aged men think that they can run, but any observer can tell that they really run about as badly as anyone could ...

... take Jeb Bush for example ...

Not a done deal yet.

Heard he is meeting with the new GM next week...he's owed $24M next year, Lions had talked about renegotiating his contract(cap hit), he'll still get $10-$15 even if he walks away. That's still a lot of dosh to leave on the table.

Lions need to rebuild(yet again), will need all the cash they can get to bring more talent in(as most draft picks have been flops)....they started by raising ticket prices 10-20%.

...yes Virginia, there are still die-hards that pay to watch this dung-heap of a franchise.

Dont kid yourself One of my sons played soccer through college. It can be just as vicious as football and with a lot less protection. He is in his mid 20’s and has an ankle that will never be the same.

Running and jumping on hardwood all those years, makes sense.

At age 65, I’ve been very fortunate. With the exception of arthritis setting into my hands and the occasional sports injuries, I’m healthy enough to play age 55+ volleyball four mornings a week then when the weather begins to warm up in the spring, it will be softball four mornings a week until the snow flies the following fall.........

I can’t ski as well as I used to, if I had his money I’d be happy building a chalet in Tahoe and watching.
