Is the new "X-Files" for real?
pure vanity | 2/3/16

Posted on 02/03/2016 6:57:37 AM PST by pabianice

We are three episodes into the new six episode reboot of "The X-Files," one of the past's best TV shows. At this point I have to wonder: What the Heck is going on?

Mr. Duchovney's performance is so bland and so flacid that I have to wonder what is going through his mind. No energy. Reads his lines like a telephone robocall. Looks tired and bored. The plot lines are tired and the last episode featuring a "wearhuman" was so stupid and badly written I thought it was a put-on. Bad plot, bad costume, bad writing, boring and nonsensical. And the role-reversal between Mulder and Sculley is also strange. Now she's the one who believes in the strange and he's the one who is skeptical.

It's been hard to watch this devolution.

Was Duchoveny contractually obligated to do this mini-series? Was anyone else? Even the music is bland and forgettable.

I liked it the episodes - David's performances were always somewhat robotic - but - take into account - the man and woman and all involved are 20 years or so older. I don't know how time flew by so fast.

Chance for aging former porn stars to connect for old times sake.

I watched the first two episodes and couldn’t believe how bad it was, The dialogue was stilted and strained. The screenplay was.... just bizarre.

It’s an alien and it has replaced the real actor. /sarc.

I just looked it up - Duchovney is 50 years old. Also, he has been doing rock shows - he was on my local rock station promoting a live appearance so his voice is probably gravely from singing. Not bad music - not my cup of tea but not bad (from what I heard on radio).

Like Lily Van Schtoop, they’re tired.

To each his own but I like it so far and they offend both sides of the political spectrum, its good seeing the two of them back in action.

I have been watching the original via Netflix. I am nearing the end of Season 2.

Even then, the Mulder character was rather low key. The X-Files did not seem to be a ‘action’ series, even then.

It is not that bad - but they are attempting to re-create lightning in a bottle after 20 years or so apart - plus the lead characters left the show angry over FOX and the producers cheating them from royalties - basically they sold the show to their own FOX network for syndication at a low low price which reduced the royalties they would have gotten if it was sold on the open market.

The episode Monday night was a “goof”. It was written that way.

I think people are expecting way too much out the show. If you remember the last couple seasons it had grown pretty long in the tooth.

Monday night was the first time in ages my ice was actually laughing out loud at a TV show. That is rare.

People forget stuff as it was and remember it how it should be.

Completely agree. First and second episodes were garbage, bad acting and writing. Third seemed a little better. It could be my standards have gotten higher since the original run, a lot of great writing since then on TV and maybe they were always this bad, and I am just miss-remembering them being better.

On a different topic, has anyone watched “Better Call Saul,” the spinoff from “Breaking Bad?” I read all kinds of praises for it, but I’ve watched a few episodes and it seems like a jumbled mess of unfunny cliches to me.

I agree, it’s terrible. I knew it was going to be hard given so much of the older series revolved around the Mulder/Scully relationship. Hard to pull that off with both stars pushing 50 but now it comes across like she’s “it’s ok grampa, we had fun once doing this” while he’s ready for the couch.
