Why Donald Trump Dropped the Ball in Iowa
vanity | February 2, 2016 | Nathan Bedford

Posted on 02/02/2016 10:49:53 AM PST by nathanbedford

Like a downfield receiver who turns to run before securing the ball and muffs the catch, Trump turned his eye to the general election and began to run toward the middle and so he muffed the election in Iowa.

Trump believed the polls, he thought he had Iowa in the bag, he was counting on New Hampshire and almost immediately thereafter South Carolina; he thought he was unstoppable all the way to the nomination. All candidates by necessity project confidence in their ultimate victory but Trump went beyond that, in describing his upcoming tenure in the Oval Office he assumed he had already won the election. His narcissism kicked into high gear.

Like all narcissists he abandoned his friends and betrayed his supporters immediately it was more profitable to seduce a new group of potential friends, supporters and voters.

So Trump began to run toward the middle. He told us what great people Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi were. He had praise for Mitch McConnell. He told us how he could "make deals" with all of them. He flirted with single-payer healthcare. He became less definite on immigration. Trump attacked Cruz from the left on the issue of biofuels in Iowa thus betraying an unseemly eagerness to pander. Trump demonstrated that as president his dalliances with big government crony capitalism would not stop, he would simply be playing the same game from the other side of the table.

The candidate who had achieved front runner status by pretending to champion the cause of disenfranchised conservatives against the GOPe/unitary party abandoned those who had supported him as the new Messiah to pander after a new pool of voters in the broader, richer, land of crony capitalism and government largess.

In short, Donald Trump unwittingly betrayed the kind of president he would be if elected, he would not be loyal to any conservative principles, he would not be loyal to the Republican Party, he would not be faithful to any cause except the advancement of Donald Trump. He did it because his ego told him he could get away with it because he believed he had already won the nomination and because it advanced, he thought, the fortunes of Donald Trump.

”Trump believed the polls, he thought he had Iowa in the bag, . . .”

Noting that I will vote for Trump or Cruz, Trump explained in his concession speech that his advisors told him not to bother campaigning in Iowa and that he was happy to come in second (my words).

Regarding the polls, I have now seen a bit of evidence that Iowa politics may be controlled by the bully pulpit, Iowans possibly telling the pollsters what they perceived that the pollsters wanted to hear.

I am glad that Trump got burned by the faulty poll numbers because Trump learns from his mistakes.

Some of them were never really in the game.

True. Of all the candidates last night, the biggest shock to me was Rand Paul. I can’t believe he only got 5 percent. I thought he was a big college guy with the students? I am glad but just surprised he ended up so low.

RE:”glad to hear that i thought it was mostly Rudy but glad to hear he and Pataki weren't the only New Yorkers!”

Its amazing the muzzies didn't head for the Trump Tower instead!

To really cripple America's spirit.

In some way you are right as far as exposure but Iowa was a tough sell for Donald Trump even with notoriety.

In a 17 man contest, timing is everything. Trump had already done the heavy lifting of messing up both Walker and Carson, and a lot of us had Walker easily being a serious contender at this point. I hope we haven't heard the last of Gov. Walker, and that he learned from his first foray into national politics. Carson is the right man for the wrong job.

His supporters all said dropping pot of the debate and picking a fight with a woman was genius.

They were wrong.

Trump would have done much better if there was a coin toss

Imagine. A coin toss.

Unspeakable, unimaginable hubris. Not a good quality in the leader of a democracy.

Defines every president in our entire history. Perhaps not a good quality but certainly an indispensable one.

100000000000 percent correct. I was sadden the day Walker dropped out. He would have been excellent. One thing we do have is a wide variety of good Conservative Republicans. Heck we could do Trump/Santorum or Trump/Walker or Trump/Cotton or Trump/Duffy. We really are very lucky. The Democrats have really a very small pool to work with because a good majority of their candidates have been whipped out at the state and federal level. Which is why they have a 68 year old and a 74 year old running and that is it.....Ok O’Malley who is 55 but received .05 last night. Their future is not bright regardless of what they think.

Indeed! While we're not from NYC nor NY state, husband was there with a Morgan Stanley group in training (he was asst. ofc. mgr at the time) and in one or other of the two towers. Forget which now, which I shouldn't but just for the record, he was there with a trainee team of guys & gals.

Their lead security guy (Rick Rescorla), was the one of many others I'm sure, went back up to get all staff out but never returned. Rick predicted another attack on the towers after the 1993 bomb blast and had been training all employees to be ready for rapid action in case his prediction came true!

Rick was a great guy and missed by many who loved him dearly for his dedication and now sacrifice. Numbers of dead in MS would have been much larger had Rick not prepared his chargees for a speedy evacuation!

You can forgive me for not knowing of Trump's involvement as we were concerned about our many friends there at the time!

they are going to GO GUNG HO with rubio.

They are because they want a youthful candidate because if you look at every Presidential election, the younger one wins at least lately. We can’t have an old Trump or Cruz going against an old Bernie and Hillary and win. We need youth at least according to the media.

You are right that Trump was/is his own worse enemy. From my perspective I've seen 2 Trumps. A very admirable, very talented and one of the world's most "Can do" individuals. And then a less admirable Trump.

BUT, why did he get where he is in the primaries. Because when he got in, he clearly pointed out issues and problems nobody dared mention. Big problems that if not solved could destroy American.

He pulled back the curtain and opened up our eyes to how much disdain the GOPe has for it's own people. Showing that elites are elites no matter what party they are in. One of the few scriptures they know is "the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table" Matthew 15:26-27.

Look at the migrant invasion destroying Europe. Doing actual harm to the average citizens. National leaders who should love their own citizens, with whom they share the same heritage, leaving them totally unprotected. That can happen here people.

By now many people know how he finished the Wollman Skating Rink in Central park in just 6 months, under budget. The city had been working on it for 2 years, was $12m over budget and was nowhere near being completed.

Virtually by himself starting the rebirth of NYC in the 1970s with the renovation of the Commodore Hotel next to Grand Central Terminal. The renovation was a success and is now the world famous Grand Hyatt Hotel of New York. Click Here for Grand Hyatt Pics

Though many of us find things about Trump disappointing and questionable, lets give him a little more time. Let's see how his defeat in Iowa changes him. See if he get's back on the track of bringing up problems and solutions.

See if he really is in this to Make American Great Again, or is he in it just cause he thinks it would make his life complete to be president.

Because we have a very real need for the "good" Trump that started the revival of NYC.

.Ok O’Malley who is 55 but received .05 last night.

The three hugest egos (two Clintons and Obama) have sucked the oxygen, fertilizer and water out of the Dem ecosystem.

Webb and O'Malley's failure toget any significant support shows that. If they really cared about winning, they could go with a mild mid-westerner with a pedigree, Evan Bayh. He knows that he cannot run in this environment. George McGovern's delegate allotment rules, plus a pool of superdelegates pulled largely from the most extreme elemments of the urban Dem machines makes it impossible for a mainstream candidate to compete for the Dem nomination unless he were already a superstar in his own right.

It is really and even now, heart rendering when reflecting back on those many days surrounding such an event!

We were all shocked, scared and angered.

We were all Americans - and thought we'd be forever friends. Liberals, of course, could only pretend to pull together for the sake of the memory of the lost.

Sorry the unity of spirit lasted such a short time!

Which leads me to believe that Trump being up by 20 points in NH is more crap. Trump will win NH only because it will be there that Cruz and Rubio split the vote. In the NE, Rubio is a conservative.
