Campaigning in Iowa last week, Donald Trump told voters, the "only way" to bring down tuition rates to affordable levels was through "some governmental program. "
The Washington Examiner reports that Mr. Trump was asked what he would do to help middle and low income Americans "pay their tuition" and "afford books while they're going to school. "
Trump said the following:
"Well the only way you can do it is you have to start some governmental program and you have governmental programs right now," Trump told the moderator during the forum, which was held at a local community college.
"They go, and they work, and they take loans, and they're borrowed up, and they can't breathe, and they get through college and the worst thing is, they go through that whole process and they don't have any job," the billionaire said, referring to the majority of undergraduates enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities.
He continued,"You know the one program that the U.S. makes a whole lot of money with is student loans, and that's maybe the one program they shouldn't be making money with. "
"So we're going to have to start a program," he said. "We're going to do something very big with loans because you have to get these people going. They really feel down and out. "
Addressing the problem of mounting student debt, Mr. Trump further suggested "we're going to do refinancing for people who have loans who literally can't do anything. "

This did not become an issue until FedGov took over the student loan industry as part of ACA.
As for what Trump said, idk.
Government loans and grants give colleges the ability to raise tuition through the roof. They only way to reign in tuitions is to add strings to government assistance, for example saying that government aid can only be used at colleges that charge less than $30,000/year.
Scholarships to Trump University!!!
Oh, wait...
Trump: The system is broken, we have to fix the system.
But of course the habitual liars in the “Conservative” media put their own spin on the statement rather then actually address what was said
....and we need a gubmint program to make banks give mortgages to people with bad credit.
Whaaaat? How about getting these colleges for once to explain their huge tuitions?
The total balance due on student loan debt is higher than total credit card debt.
What would a conservative do?
I think this is something the “Conservative” media machine might want to keep in mind. Candidates come and go, your reputation follows you around for the rest of our career in media.
Really want to get a reputation as habitual liars? Take a look at how that tactic has worked for your cohorts in the Leftist media.
>> “So we’re going to have to start a program,” he said. “We’re going to do something very big with loans because you have to get these people going. They really feel down and out. “
Why shore! Big government programs are the conservative way! You HAVE to “get these people going”, right Donnie! After all, they feel “down and out”; why should they take personal responsibility for their own voluntary actions?
You have to figure out why college is so expensive to begin with. Two hundred dollar books written by the prof. you’ll have and only need to read just one paragraph for starters.
“What did he say?”
I think he said more govt spending is the solution to a problem that was created by govt spending.
Better yet, “If you can’t afford it, spend your money in a tech school. We have enough Womyns’s studies, etc.”
NOT competition and first party payer.
See: 0bamaCare on steroids.
That's Donald's Fair Warning.
Will any listen?
>> What would a conservative do?
What’s wrong with simply requiring borrowers pay back what they borrowed? That’s what this conservative would do.
Sorry Don. The best way to bring down costs in Universities is to remove ALL government funding. State and Federal.
Yet more proof that Donald Trump is a liberal. A big government authoritarian liberal.
