Trump Didn't Want Disabled Veterans Near Trump Tower, Petitioned To Have Them Removed

In a statement following his announcement that he would not be participating in tonight's GOP debate on Fox News, Donald Trump‘s campaign said, "[He will] host an event in Iowa to raise money for the Veterans and Wounded Warriors, who have been treated so horribly by our all talk, no action politicians." This morning, Ben Ferguson contrasted that with statements the real estate tycoon made in 1991 and 2004, when he tried to get homeless and disabled veterans kicked off of Fifth Avenue in front of the famed Trump Tower.

Trump is decrying "all talk, no action politicians" now just as he was in the 1990s, though the action he wanted the New York State Assembly to take then regarding disabled veterans was markedly different than the action he is blaming President Barack Obama's administration for not taking now. (It should be noted, too, that actions that have been taken by some organizations to aid veterans have turned out not to be all they claim to be.) In a 1991 letter to the Assembly, he wrote, "While disabled veterans should be given every opportunity to earn a living, is it fair to do so to the detriment of the city as a whole or its tax paying citizens and businesses?"

By "detriment of the city," the future GOP frontrunner meant "detriment of Trump Tower," which sits on Fifth Avenue. While it is known as a ritzy shopping district in New York, Fifth Avenue is also the home of dozens of opportunistic street vendors. Many of them are disabled veterans who are given special licenses by the Department of Consumer Affairs. According to The Daily News, the protections and exceptions extended to peddling veterans date back to the 1890s and were created to give those who were disabled in the Civil War an opportunity to support themselves.

Though previous attempts to relocate veterans to streets where they would make less money didn't work, Trump was undeterred. In 2004, he wrote to then-mayor and possible future presidential rival Michael Bloomberg, imploring him to help get rid of the wounded warriors on his street.

"Whether they are veterans or not, they should not be allowed to sell on this most important and prestigious shopping street," he wrote. "The image of New York City will suffer… I hope you can stop this very deplorable situation before it is too late."

The GOP debate and Trump's counter-event begin in 10 hours, so get your strongest drinks ready because this topic is sure to come up once or twice or 15 times tonight

try it, you might just survive.

if Fifth avenue prestige is more important that some vets making a buck (not BUMS as someone called them), then he’s your man.

most people couldn’t afford ninety percent of the things sold in that area.

YES, i’ve worked right next to it many times.

So, being a business genius who loves making a deal, why didn’t he invest in sharp looking small kiosks for them with some sort of “Trump 4 Vets” logo?

I support Ted Cruz who has actually fought the establishment as well as defended the rights of veterans before the Supreme Court.

My son died in Iraq, but if he were here, I have no doubt he would be very proud to have Ted Cruz as his Commander in Chief.

NY Values.

Rudy cleaned up the homeless sleeping on grates to keep warm, and the car window washers.

These were disabled veterans who had licenses for their vendor businesses.

So tourists who go to look and can’t afford the sweeping elegant overpriced merchandise can’t buy a souvenir? Hoity toity. Of course, I was born in the Bronx. Hate to shop though. Country to the bone.

These were disabled veterans with vendor licenses, not homeless.

In 2004, he wrote to then-mayor and possible future presidential rival Michael Bloomberg, imploring him to help get rid of the wounded warriors on his street. ........................ Really, he used the term “wounded warriors” or was it pan handlers? Anyone can make a card board sign and claim he was a vet. Its like 3 million guys went to Nam, and there are 9 million claims for agent orange. Its another desperate hit piece. Funny I heard worse about Hillary and no one bothers to look into it. Its always a one way street for the hypocrites in the Demonicrat party.

.... So let me get this straight:
1. Trump basically declared war on disabled veterans because they were too icky to be near his fancy building
2. Trump tried to force a widow out of her house for his casino’s limo parking lot
And we are supposed to believe he’s a “man of the people.”
He’s less of a man of the people that Hillary.
Yeah, but if you drank the koolaid nothing matters. They believe everyone of donnie’s lies and when presented with facts they either trash the source or call it a lie. It is total blind allegiance to a left progressive who would screw them in a heart beat and will if he is elected prez. I guess they will cheer his progressive views at that time as well.
In real life he is right there with Hill, he is just a good salesman.

LOL I did see a video of Trump telling his assistant that a home within view of his golf course had to go, “just get rid of it,” posted here on FR a while back. I fear for the White House staff and the colonial decor.

Probably realized there’s no money in it, which is why most of America doesn’t peddle goods in the streets of their towns, and those he tried to shut down, are floundering. I doubt he really cared whether they were veterans, or not—just wanted the bubble-blowers & cotton-candy vendors gone.

Having said that, he actually DID build a nice permanent kiosk in front of his building - The Trump Store - that was extremely professional and high-end. So there’s that!

I’d also point out that I don’t fall into the category of thinking Trump needs to solve the problem of fake disabled vet peddlers, because he complains about them and wants them gone.

I’ve noticed now on several threads regarding different topics here at FR, the quick rush to assign responsibility to him for funding, underwriting, or fixing things he doesn’t support - like street vendors.

Seems kind of nanny-statey, doesn’t it? Like, he can’t complain about peddlers unless he provides better kiosks, underwrites them, etc? Really?

Pass!

Look, I understand and respect your anger. I totally understand why you are buying what Trump is selling.

I am frustrated because you are being sold a bill of goods from Trump, who is the most RINO of RINOS. He’s corrupt and cronie capitalist to the core.

And he’s playing good people like you for fools.

So, yes, I am mad. Not at you: you are the victim of probably the best con man I’ve ever seen.

But you are being conned.
