Man drives 1,700 miles to retrieve his lost-and-found cat
A cat named Hemi is back with his owner, who drove 1,700 miles from North Dakota to retrieve his lost-and-found pet.
Multiple media outlets report Robert Connell drove from Bismarck to the Craven County, North Carolina, animal shelter to pick up Hemi on Monday.
Connell says he decided to make the drive after the winter storm nixed plans for a family friend to fly Hemi to Bismarck.
Connell served as a Marine, and he says Hemi helped him cope with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Robert and his wife lived in North Carolina when they found Hemi in 2009. Hemi disappeared in 2011 when Robert deployed.
The family later moved to Bismarck when Robert got a new job.
Hemi turned up last week, and a microchip enabled officials to find the Connells.
I’d drive twice that far for mine.
Only the strong survive.
It happens on farms if they don’t climb a tree or something fast enough.
Couldn’t they just FedEx it?
Being both a meat eater and not insane of course I have different rules for animals in different roles. Much as I have different rules for people in different roles in my life. It’s not terribly tough to figure out on your own.
That would be a working animal, this discussion is about a pet.
I would probably drive 1,700 miles to ditch my cat back... and the damn thing would still probably find its way back.....( just kidding I don’t have a cat,.... anymore..... the dog ate it;)
Why cat haters have to get on kitty threads to make snarky stupid comments is beyond me. DU Trolls maybe?
because every cat I’ve ever had is like a liberal
it shows up at the house uninvited .....expects you to feed it...act like owns the damn place and you’re the servant..... and you can’t get rid of them....
On this at least. Although I don’t live in an area with coyotes, we have had marauding dogs. Because of allergies, I used to keep my cats outside in our acre yard where they could run around. Sometimes one of those wild dogs would kill one of our pets or they’d get struck by a car.
Eventually, we finally brought in our last two cats when they were nearly killed by stray dogs. I still harbor enormous guilt for our dead cats that could’ve had a nice long and comfy life indoors. I hate the flip attitude some have here about cats as if they’re disposable pets. Far from it.
Once I drove 2 miles to drop off a nosey, bothersome, neighborhood stray in to another neighborhood. That cat was back at the door in less than an hour!
Anybody that lets their cats get eaten by coyotes shouldnât be allowed to have pets. Youâre negligent and should feel shame.

One only has so much control over coyotes.
Coyote zones move in our neck of the woods.
We used to do the indoor/outdoor thing. Had one hit by a car. Then one disappeared for a while and came back. It was $200 Jack that made us change, he had a habit of getting injuries that we got tired of paying for, so we switched them to indoors. Now he’s like 17 years old, no way he’d have made that going outside.
We’ve got coyotes, eagles, owls, cars, javelinas. It’s a dangerous world for 12 pound creatures that think they’re at the top of the food chain. So the pets stay inside.
If you hate cats then stay off cat threads. Do you just get a kick out of being obnoxious? That’s what LIBERALS do.
Whatever you say. Live next to a 600 acre nature preserve. I’ve had dogs and cats my whole life. Had indoor cats, outdoor cats, big dogs, little dogs. Some cats are extremely unhappy if they can’t go outside. Sometimes nature gets them. We had de-clawed cats (we adopted them that way already) and they never set foot outside. I had a Lhasa Apso killed in my own yard by a Husky that got loose. That sucked, but you get over it.
I live next door to a dry river bed that all the wild animals of the region use. I keep them indoors because I have a responsibility to protect them from their own walnut sized brains. Cats will learn to like inside a lot faster than they’ll learn to like getting eaten.
Wasn’t trying to be funny. Just stating my opinion. I like cats, like dogs more as they have more utility in general. It’s a fact that cats can pretty easily be replaced as thousands are in need of adoption. Dogs are a little tougher to replace. JMHO. Your mileage may vary.
Our oldest will be 14 soon. It’s remarkable he and his grandmother managed to last outside as long as they did, but the grandma was a VERY smart cat. She sustained a broken leg when those dogs attacked at night while they slept hidden inside a large box on our front porch. It took me a few days to find them both, as they took refuge in woods behind our house (she must’ve run interference for the grandson to run away, as he was uninjured).
The vet told us that we either keep her inside, or she wouldn’t survive the next attack. She’d have turned 17 this year, but died from oral cancer 3 years ago, but enjoyed her time (4 years) inside the house right up to the end.
Since then, I tamed and rescued two other feral cats hanging around our yard, and they’re safe and healthy inside.
There’s something very satisfying about providing a good home to pets. Whenever I look around on a lazy afternoon and see the cats laying and sleeping deeply instead of the light sleep cats are famous for I know I have succeeded at one of my life goals, I have created a home that is relaxing and comfortable, a place of peace. I mean I know that on an intellectual level, but the cats supply that visual evidence the human brain likes so much.
Exactly.
