EBay Inc's shares plunged 13 percent on Thursday, after a disappointing holiday-quarter performance and a weak forecast suggested that overwhelming competition from Amazon.com Inc was gutting the one-time Wall Street favorite.
EBay, which gets more than half its revenue from overseas, is also fighting the impact of a strong dollar, which has knocked the wind out of profits at several companies that have reported results this earnings season.
The stock fell to $23.01 in early trading, knocking off $4 billion from Ebay's market value.

What’s EBay?

EBay is to Amazon what MySpace was to Facebook.
They started charging big fees and ticked off their steady customers / business owners. Many went over to Amazon.
I sell things on CraigsList.
No insane COMMISSIONS needed...
I’ve done pretty well this past year.
I think it’s because most of the sellers have quit because of the fees.
You know, ebay, the website of nothing but advertisement’s that takes forever to load and somehow the owners think interrupting purchases trying to be made makes good business sense, or that charging ridiculous fees to sellers is good business.
To add to that, private sellers. I sold a LOT of items on Ebay for several years, but the fees on everything (including a fee on shipping charges (?), which Ebay had nothing to do with) basically made Ebay unprofitable and untenable for most private sellers. I haven’t sold anything on Ebay for almost four years and it’s now primarily an additional online venue for direct sales, a venue for retail resellers and the prices aren’t all that good.
I had a terrible time getting eBay to enforce their refund when I didn’t get a product. I had to buy three more low price items from the seller and slime him with reviews before he answered my emails. Must have worked, in the end I won.
I continue to buy a lot of used and new items on Ebay, especially computer and technology parts. I also use Amazon and especially Newegg.
Tell me where else am I going to get a working SCSI disk controller for an old circa 2002 Dell 5U Server???
You just have to shop around.
We are moving in a couple of months and have been clearing out the house, amazing what you can sell on Craigslist, a great virtual garage sale. I tried selling on ebay and got nothing
EBay is to Amazon what MySpace was to Facebook.
Their early model worked. It doesn’t work for me any more as a buyer. As a seller it is poison.
Can anyone give some tips on how to search for items on Amazon?
For example, how would I find 5” long stainless wood screws?
Or a N80 valve for a 2005 Touareg?
Something that was replaced with Amazon Prime with free shipping and the best on line return policy.
Ebay made it nearly impossible to sell and make a profit on their platform. I used to sell a lot there, I’m surprised they’re still alive.
I've sold many items on CL but not for profit. It's to hopefully get rid of junk and maybe get a few bucks in return.
However, I DO purchase all my softball bats off Ebay as does a friend of mine.
What’s Facebook?
Every time I think I should sell something on Ebay... I remember the time I sold something and had shipped it to the buyer with tracking confirming he received it and the buyer claiming he didn’t receive it and Ebay taking my money from the sale.
I will NEVER sell anything through Ebay again in this lifetime after that.
Craigslist in person cash in my hand before I give anything away from now on.
#12 I always start with a google search.
Example: 5” stainless wood screws, amazon
I got ripped off twice and said , “I’m done here”
What is a Touregg?
