AR-15 Rifle, Ammo Go Missing After OC Deputy Places Case on Vehicle and Drives Off: Authorities

Sheriff's officials in Orange County [California] on Wednesday were searching for an AR-15 patrol rifle that went missing after a deputy placed it on the trunk of his vehicle and drove away, authorities said.

The deputy, assigned to the Aliso Viejo station, was preparing his equipment before his assigned shift began about 7 p.m. Tuesday, according to a statement from the Orange County [California] Sheriff's Department.

The rifle was described by officials as a black, semi-automatic, .223-caliber Colt AR-15 with a 20-inch barrel and serial No. A0091856. It was inside its black case with three loaded magazines when the deputy placed it on the trunk, the news release said, adding that he "became distracted and drove off before securing it inside his vehicle."

About 3:15 a.m., he realized the weapon was unaccounted for and a search was launched, the Sheriff's Department said.

What if a lowly, peon citizen did this? Gun grabbers wpuld have the guy fined and jailed. Will the cop lose his job? Even a day’s pay? They would crucify Joe Citizen. Early to mid 1980’s, USAF security police were in western Nebraska, about 100 miles east of the main support base (Cheyenne, WY) providing security to the missile complex. “Someone” removed an M-60 machine gun from the armored vehicle that it was in, and placed it loosely atop the same vehicle. Said vehicle departed field location and returned to main base. SPs went to secure the M-60 at the armory and, surprise, surprise, it was nowhere to be found.

Next day, there were “lines” of SPs, walking the 100 miles of I-80 in western Nebraska and eastern Wyoming, from fence to fence in the medians and side areas, to retrace the route taken by the vehicle, looking for the missing weapon which had fallen off somewhere. I’d heard that anyone who was an SP and not on leave got called out for the search.

It was later found outside a fenced area of I-80; they surmised that someone had initially found it, then realizing “what” they’d found, got scared and dumped it. I think the JAG’s office was busy processing separations from the Air Force too.

You know fully well what was lost was an M4, they just called it an AR-15 to keep the heat off them for losing a machine gun. Every State Trooper, Sheriff's deputy and City cop I know has a Colt M4 as a service rifle. To a man, none of them have AR's assigned by the armorer.
