Sheriff's officials in Orange County [California] on Wednesday were searching for an AR-15 patrol rifle that went missing after a deputy placed it on the trunk of his vehicle and drove away, authorities said.
The deputy, assigned to the Aliso Viejo station, was preparing his equipment before his assigned shift began about 7 p.m. Tuesday, according to a statement from the Orange County [California] Sheriff's Department.
The rifle was described by officials as a black, semi-automatic, .223-caliber Colt AR-15 with a 20-inch barrel and serial No. A0091856. It was inside its black case with three loaded magazines when the deputy placed it on the trunk, the news release said, adding that he "became distracted and drove off before securing it inside his vehicle."
About 3:15 a.m., he realized the weapon was unaccounted for and a search was launched, the Sheriff's Department said.

Or like the recent post of those that shot up the truck: wrong color, wrong make, wrong gender, wrong...~700 rounds and they STILL (thankfully) couldn’t manage to kill both/either occupants.
Yep, just another day in the life of inept, irresponsible, unaccountable, uncaring, bloated govt ‘public servants’...whose actions MAY get one KILLED (inadvertently or purposefully??).
If it WAS inadvertently, they MAY issue a ‘so sorry’ letter/presser. I mean, it WAS an ‘accident’, come on! /s
prolly won't even make the puke pay for it...
I worked with Ashcroft’s FBI protective detail every day for 3 years after 9/11. Locking the bigger guns up in the Suburban while going for lunch or is standard procedure, so unless they failed to lock up properly, no, they wouldn’t have been penalized.
Stories like this are the reason I live in the country.Very rarely do I have any interaction with the Sheriff’s dept, who are actually very good people in this county.
The guy must be semi-comatose to mishandle a deadly weapon the way he did.
I did a number of rotations to NTC/Ft. Irwin while I was in 1st ID. On one of them, our rotation was pushed back a few days because the 4th ID brigade in front of us spent a few days walking the desert at one arm intervals looking for an M9 pistol that had crawled out of its holster.
dear ben,
re:
‘I drove off with a fast food order on the top of my car once. Didnât notice until the milkshake splashed down the driverâs side window.
Thatâs kind of the same thing isnât it?’
Ya’s cain’t a-go ‘n’ shoot nobody w’id a spilt milkshake, naw, cain’t ya?’
Has he checked “lost and found” at Walmart, Target, etc.?
lol!
Get a stripped lower.
Transfer all other parts to it.
Leave the lower in an embarrassing place... or not.
So it's an AR-15 'patrol rifle'. What happened to the term 'assault rifle'?
Yes, AR-15 or M4 are virtually indistinguishable from one another except for the feed ramps, and the selector.
Outdoor writer Nash Buckingham lost his very rare Fox shotgun, nicknamed Bo Whoop, the same way in 1948. The gun was in it’s case and left on the fender of his car. It finally turned up in 2006 and was auctioned off for $175K in 2010. There were some skeptics that questioned the gun, but the details seemed to confirm it was Buckingham’s long lost gun.
An AR?
Nothin.
I wanna find an M16.
Racists.
Coffee first. Donuts can wait.
When will the calls for Sheriff Hutchens to step down begin? First the jailbreak fiasco and now this. I mean the buck stops where, exactly?
OK...I’ve done that with my morning coffee, but NEVER with an AR-15!
Wonder how much he got for the gear? Needed quick money for something.
