Word For The Day: GALDRAGION
2000 Most Challenging and Obscure Words | Norman Schur

Posted on 01/26/2016 7:48:16 PM PST by Louis Foxwell

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

GALRAGON [GAL druh guhn]

hear it pronounced

noun

If you saw the word and didn't know where the accent was you might think it was a slang term for a female dragon, but you'd be wide of the mark, unless you want to stretch a point.

To end the suspense, GALRAGON is what the people of the Shetland Islands used to call a sorceress or witch. The word has nothing to do with dragons in the sense of the legendary fire-breathing variety.

The Shetlanders took the word from Old Norse galdra-kona, a combination of galdra (incantation, crowing, or witchcraft generally) and kuna (woman).

A crowing woman may resemble a "dragon" in the slang sense of an intimidating beady-eyed old female, but the etymology is as stated.

Dunno. Doubt any of them want to write off the first votes that will be cast.

And as everyone says this year is ... Different. One thing that’s certain is if trump starts to unravel, it’s gonna get ugly fast.

Xshub is doing good work, informing the masses. Everyone out here seems to keep up with politics, likely because the only other things going on here are work-when you have it-who has what for sale/trade and what/who your neighbors are doing, etc-not a lot of distractions, like in a city. There isn’t a lot of debate, since liberals are more rare than gold here-no GOPe, either-people are pretty much okay with Trump or Cruz, and I have to say I’m equally ambivalent. Jeb makes my teeth itch, and Rubio doesn’t seem to have a lot of concrete ideas, or the cojones to stand up to Isis, Iran, Putin, etc. The others are just flailing around until they are toast, I think.

I don’t watch the debates-I haven’t since they became a platform for the driveby media-and I’ve never been a fan of MK, or watched her show more than a time or two-she just seems like another self-important reporterette who thinks it is all about her. I wonder how good an attorney she was...

That is so cool, especially the tiny red wagon. A very special award for a brilliant lyricist.

You are hereby awarded our highest honor, The Mighty Pen award -

What’s disturbing is the Trump fans who are no longer hiding their Jew hate. We all knew there were the white genocide “cuck” idiots. But the name calling of Jews and even holocaust denial I’ve seen lately is something else.

It’s already ugly, but I will give you that it can get worse. I have skimmed the Trump threads and can find no, and I mean NO Trumpster talking issues. Just name calling, and a lot of that.

Hillary, the man-hating galdragon, continues on her merry cackling way, knowing obozo’s justice dept. doesn’t have the cojones to go after her felonious behavior.

Any freeper not disgusted by Donald Trump’s shameful birther jihad against Ted Cruz must have had a spell cast on them by a galdragon, like Ann Coulter. ;)

Cool word, never heard it before. Why do you spell it twice without the “d”? An error?

By googling it the correct spelling appears to be “Galdragon” not “Galdragion” as it’s spelled in the title or “Galragon” as it’s spelled after that in the main text of the OP.

I’m loving this word. It must be very obscure. Google says it’s an approved scrabble word.

A series of errors. The word is correctly spelled “galdragon”.
