WASHINGTON (AP) -- All adults, including pregnant women and new mothers, should be screened for depression as a routine part of health care, a government advisory group recommended Tuesday.
Depression is a common public health problem, and screening simply involves health workers asking about certain symptoms even if patients don't mention them.

My other thought on that topic - they’re going to give CCLs to all kinds of whack jobs and when they go off say, this is what permitted carrying causes.
Nobody ever expects the ATF SWAT team!
“The situation that led to the depression is still there.”
Yes and no :-). What you are describing is not “depression” per say. Depression is due to a sick brain. It can be related to all sorts of problems, but the underlying cause is, for lack of better terms, a sick brain.
Some medications work wonders for some people. It’s not fair to state that these medications mask an underlying problem in all cases. Sometimes the problem is a chemical imbalance and the medication solves that problem much like an insulin injection solves the problem for a person suffering from diabetes.
Having said all of that, I am fairly certain that the diagnosis of depression is used far too often and the medications are prescribed hap hazardously in many cases.
I’m sure this task force will be motivated to label anyone that is feeling sad “depressed”. It’ll have to create a big problem to justify its existence. It’ll dumb down the diagnosis and new regulations surrounding “depression” will screw with our freedoms.
I am beyond sick and tired of politics screwing with medical science (hell, science in general). It’s wrecked autism (and related) treatment ... looks like they want to cast a bigger net as all of us at one point or another has “felt” depressed.
If 40% of my fellow citizens are depressed and probably many of those on anti-depressants, it's over for America.
This is nothing more than a transparent attempt to establish data prior to the future gun grab.
DON’T ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS, IF YOU KNOW WHAT’S GOOD FOR YOU.

Just the govt’s. way of whittling down who can possess firearms.
I’ve been depressed since 1990 or so....
Whenever I get asked that question,(Are you feeling depressed?) usually by the poor nurse taking your vitals, my comeback is “You first!”
If you even give a hint that you are, that goes into your record and is available for the government, like if you want to buy a gun. Forget that HIPAA privacy crap - it doesn’t apply here.

Bingo, diagnose everyone with depression, then report them to Obama’s new mental health registry and take their guns away.
Exactly. it’s called Situational Depression, and it’s NORMAL. It lasts for an indefinite period of time and then it goes away. Suppose your job is making you depressed. Do you really need to be medicated to enable you to continue on that dismal path, when all you really need is to GTFO of there and you’ll feel better instantly. As Freud (I think) said, there is no cure for the human condition.
Considering the state of the world, isn’t depression a sign of sanity?
“If 40% of my fellow citizens are depressed and probably many of those on anti-depressants, it’s over for America.”
This is *exactly* what I mean by bad diagnosis of a problem. There is NO WAY 40% of a population has a problem with their brain much like someone might have a problem with their pancreas in the case of diabetes. Humans aren’t perfect, but we’re not *that* imperfect!
The *only* reason I know about any of this is due to both myself and family. I once thought I was struggling with depression. A doctor offered zoloft. I found a new doctor. She recommended exercise since I basically sit at a computer all day. Exercise miraculously worked.
Now the family member was genuinely ‘depressed’. Medications helped in that case, but that was due to chemicals in the brain and the like.
Depression diagnosis is one of those things that can be abused. I don’t want to see the medications get maligned as they *can* help if you have a doctor that does their job and doesn’t dish them out like candies. However, if a task force is being created to “smash depression”, it’ll have the same effect as the “War on Drugs” had on illegal drugs both here in the USA and abroad ...
No doubt. Russians probably think we’re crazy with all this medication. But they’re probably also like, welcome to the (depression) club. In Russkiye, who ISN’T depressed?
Government as Columbo: “No one who’s depressed should be allowed to own guns. Oh... and one other thing... everyone will now be checked for their personal degree of depression (on a scale of 1 to 100).
Step One: Screen Everyone For Depression
Step Two: ????
Step Three: CONFISCATE GUNS!
Will this Bull Shit ever end??
Not peacefully.
yup, no pill is going to make my existing problems go away...
Well, that’s a little intrusive...
