Why Would Cruz Insult New Yorkers?
RealClearPolitics ^ | 24 Jan, 2016 | Steve Chapman

When it comes to votes, the state of New York is a gold mine. In the 2012 presidential election, more than 11 million New Yorkers were registered. By itself, New York accounted for half of Barack Obama's margin of victory in the popular vote over Mitt Romney.

You might think Republicans who want to win the White House this year would be trying to improve that performance by appealing to residents of the Empire State. But Ted Cruz is doing the opposite: He sneered that Donald Trump would be bad for America because he "embodies New York values." If Cruz gets the nomination, the state's residents, from Easthampton to Buffalo, won't forget the insult.

But you know what? Cruz doesn't care. He has no reason to care. That's because of a curious artifact known as the Electoral College. The fact that a major candidate is happy to write off so many Americans is just one more piece of evidence that this system is a bad way to elect a president -- and that both parties ought to make it a priority to abolish it.

Under the Electoral College, we don't have a national election for president. We have 50 state elections, and nearly every one of them is winner-take-all. New York hasn't voted for a Republican for president since 1984 -- and even if Queens native Donald Trump heads the ticket, it won't do so this year.

Thank you for explaining what should be obvious to people.

So you are from a perfect state? Perhaps you should consider seceding so you aren’t polluted by the rest of us.

20% turnout...you might say they are discouraged from so many years of liberal grabs. Perhaps someone like Trump could get the other 80% motivated by giving them something to vote for.

Trump will carry New York.”

In the primary, yes.

I agree, but I also think he has a chance in the general. Why? Because New York City is not all of New York. There are some very strong Republican areas in the state so if Trump can carve out enough votes in his home town he has a shot. I would not write off New York as a sure-fire Dem. win, especially if Hillery is their pick.

Without the Electoral College the president would be elected almost entirely by the same large, population dense urban areas that have been electing Democrat local officials for the past 50 yearsm

Cruz said it because anyone who is not a New Yorker hates New York

We would if we could, but the right of states to secede from the union was taken away by conquest as a result of the War Between the States, also known as the War of Northern Aggression or the Civil War.

I totally agree! Getting the voters out is a Democrat strength. Who has been trying to get the other voters out? Who has been a big enough voice to be heard above the Democrats. A well known businessman, a well known T.V. star, a well known person in his home town has unbelievble name recognition. Think of all the people Trump employs and their families and friends. Think of all the people who use that skating rink and visit the Vet Monument that Trump built. Think of all the people who have been helped one way or another through his quiet generosity and they too have family and friends. I think there could very well be a silent majority who will for the first time in a long time see a glimmer of hope and will turn out to vote for someone they know. There is IMHO a much greater chance for NY to go Republican because of Trump than has existed in decades.

The NYers who were offended were pretending to be offended and were never ever ever going to vote for a conservative like Cruz. Oh, and trumpy concern trolls pretended to be offended too, because 911 or something.

Conservative NYers know exactly what Cruz was talking about. Exactly.

You could still visit Texas, as long as you get a visa, pass an extensive background check before you are admitted, and leave when your visa expires.

You could also apply to immigrate here, but much more extensive requirements would apply and you would only be accepted if you have a skill or trade that we need.

Unfortunately we would have to build a wall along both our Southern and Northern borders.

;-)

The fact in my opinion is that there was or never is a chance for Ted to get the New York vote, period. I like Ted, but this just isn’t in the cards.

There is a chance that Donald, however, could draw some New York votes away.

In the end, it won’t do anything good for Ted in New York in my book. It was a complete error on his part in my opinion regardless of the sympathy I have for him. An error of bad advice IMO.

Even if Trump doesn’t win NY if he forces Dems to defend heavily blue states the election is over.

Cruz’s mistake was not just attacking Trump directly. By attacking NY he opened himself up to an easy counterattack. Too cute by half, IMO.

Conservative NYers know exactly what Cruz was talking about. Exactly.

That's the impression I've been getting from New Yorkers with a true conservative bent.

As far as the comparison between Trump and Reagan is concerned, its downright dishonest. Reagan didn't pander to liberals for votes, Reagan sold conservative republicanism to those democrats who conservative but democrat by habit. What I grew up with here in the heart of Reagan Democrat territory is that Reaganomics helped attract democrats but the real draw was in making them see that traditional social values were welcome within the GOP at a time when they were being purged from the democrats.

Today some 40% of MI union members are already voting republican and the rest are on the socialist to marxist scale. My cousin is one of those mixed socialist union democrats. He likes traditional family values but wants someone to pay for full medical and wants to retire at 50. He and a couple doesn't of his union "brothers" went to the big Trump rally in Grand Rapids a couple weeks ago but only because they wrote it up as union duties and got paid for it. They're still going to vote for Clinton or Sanders.
