An excerpt is, usually, the 1st one or two paragraphs of a news story.

Oh yeah, we just love the current regime, they give us lots of posting fodder.

Welcome to Free Republic!

It s cut and past really.

1. Never change the title of the article you re excerpting.

2. If you include a comment of your own inside quoted material use brackets [] s, not parens () s. Including putting [barf] alerts at the end of the title.

3. Never change the attribution. If you found it on Breitbart but its from an article written in Scientific America, try and link the original article and use the original author.

An excerpt is part(s) of the article that provide a general idea of the article. This is usually the first paragraph or so, but there are times when you may want to bring up certain specific points from the article instead of just the first paragraph. If you choose to do that notate that when posting, for example:

Rule 1: Be Nice To Your Little Sister

[SNIP]

Rule 8: DON’T Drive On The Railroad Tracks

A perfect opportunity to make a point............

Lazy FReepers that use the auto-excerpt function do the forum a disservice.

Rather than getting the pertinent info in the excerpt, the majority of the time one needs to click on the link to get to the meat of the article.

That is ok (giving hits to rags like the NY Times notwithstanding) unless the link to the article no longer exists.

Before the copyright protection edicts, FR was a great research tool.

Now, if you do a search for an article that was posted a year ago chances are the link will no longer exists, leaving one with nothing but the auto-excerpt which is almost always useless.

FReepers should post the relevant details of the article in excerpted snippets in order to have a permanent record on FR.

LOL this must be the weak for novices and learning to post.

Also posted first time this week. First- no problem; second URL too long so no acceptance by the program. At last an idea to include link in the actual posted wording. A bit nerve wrecking,, but did survive to attempt another day.

BTW - looking good from the view of this novice! Good luck to ‘ya
