I'm just trying to learn how to post. Bare with me.

An excerpt is part(s) of the article that provide a general idea of the article. This is usually the first paragraph or so, but there are times when you may want to bring up certain specific points from the article instead of just the first paragraph. If you choose to do that notate that when posting, for example:
Rule 1: Be Nice To Your Little Sister
[SNIP]
Rule 8: DON’T Drive On The Railroad Tracks

Lazy FReepers that use the auto-excerpt function do the forum a disservice.
Rather than getting the pertinent info in the excerpt, the majority of the time one needs to click on the link to get to the meat of the article.
That is ok (giving hits to rags like the NY Times notwithstanding) unless the link to the article no longer exists.
Before the copyright protection edicts, FR was a great research tool.
Now, if you do a search for an article that was posted a year ago chances are the link will no longer exists, leaving one with nothing but the auto-excerpt which is almost always useless.
FReepers should post the relevant details of the article in excerpted snippets in order to have a permanent record on FR.
It’s like a break. It indicates that there are omitted parts of the original article between what you posted. In my example, I only posted rules 1 & 8 with a [SNIP] in between. Rules 2-7 would be contained in the original article.

Excerpt: A few paragraphs of the article instead of the whole thing. Fair use and copyright stuff.
That’s my true goal, making people laugh.
