Any helicopter experts out there? Maybe someone with ties to the industry? I'm looking for statistical information about helicopter use, or someone who can point me to a web source with reliable stats.
No, it is for a project within the aviation industry.
I didn’t want to start down that road if someone before me has already asked these questions and posted results. I may have to do some digging, but I just need rough estimates.
Including the bailing wire preventing all 20,000 from jumping ship?
Good idea! I will do that.
Some stats found here: https://www.rotor.org/Safety/SafetyStatistics.aspx
The best estimate I found was 60,000 helicopters worldwide and split about evenly between civilian and military. However the numbers are over 10 years old. I saw another estmate of 45,000 worldwide, but they didn’t cite a source. I still have no idea how to estimate actual usage (hours/year) on the aircraft. Some might be used heavily such as with coast guard flights and some may be hanger queens that are deemed too expensive to fly by their owners.
Thanks much!
I was kidding of course.
The quarterly safety reports have hours of operation for the US, so that is a really useful statistic for me. It also give accident rates, which I will find a use for.
FReepers are Awesome!
I know. LOL
Variation will exist depending on how you search. Look for general aviation helicopter numbers
bad a bing
Looked at FAA stuff - useless. My friend who is currently in Africa texted me back and said he thinks 35,000 helo pilots world wide including military. As far as number of working helos anyone’s guess. He said he has seen hundreds in Russia rotting away in some field.
I’ve only heard of the Jesus nut. Not sure of the other 19999
That’s funny!
A friend of mine who is a charter pilot out of Iowa, told me once that a helicopter is a machine specifically built to kill its pilot and passengers.
On their statistics page, the FAA has downloadable spreadsheets showing ESTIMATED ACTIVE ROTORCRAFT PILOTS BY CLASS OF CERTIFICATE 1. I’m assuming these are helicopter pilots.
