Air Force apologizes for advertising a 'fun shoot' at range on Martin Luther King Day using image of murdered civil rights leader
- The controversial poster advertised a skeet shoot at an Air Force base in Georgia
- The flyer promised attendees would get 'two rounds and lunch' for $20 and featured a picture of Martin Luther King, Jr.
- Air Force officials issued a statement apologizing for the 'insensitive' flyer
Officials at an Air Force base in Georgia drew criticism on Thursday after posting controversial flyers advertising a 'Martin Luther King, Jr. fun shoot' featuring a picture of the civil rights leader, who was gunned down in 1968.
The flyers announced a gathering at the Robins Air Force Base Skeet Club scheduled for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. For $20, the poster promised, attendees would get 'two rounds and lunch.'
The Air Force base, which is located in the town of Warner Robins in central Georgia, released a statement on Thursday apologizing for the poster, calling it 'inappropriate' and an 'honest mistake.'
'We didn't make the flyer,' Leroy Minus told the newspaper. 'We squared it away. We got rid of the picture.'
In the conclusion of the Air Force base's statement officials said they 'hold the legacy of Dr. King in the highest regard.'

How many times must we tell you??????????????
Do Not Offend The Special People
Probably not the best poster idea.
LOL, this will be as Yuuuge as telling Brian Williams jokes.
I hear that there are areas in Chicago where there was a Fun Shoot Planned for this date Years Ago
What is the connection between trap shooting and the death of MLK..?
Kids SWAM on the base on MLK Day —can I get the USAF to apologize for that ALSO...?
The USAF seems to be very eager to apologize for all manner of bugbears —how can they be serious about something as important as national self-defense..?
He’s been dead for 48 years. Most of the people in the Air Force today hadn’t even been born yet. By the time 48 years had passed since Lincoln’s assassination, we’d already killed two more Presidents. Get over it.
MLK supported gun rights.
Remington model 760?
I wasn’t as big a fan of Martin Luther King as others were. That said, there’s no way I would approve of how his life ended. I wouldn’t ever make light of it either.
It’s my take that he has been glorified far beyond what he should have been. I still respect the role he played in the Civil Rights movement, and I honestly think he would be severely disappointed with how his race was failed by the movement after his death.
I respect that about him.
People get together on holidays for recreational activities. They may not think of the exact reasons they are off on that day, but the day is none the less a joyous break from the monotony of life.
I don’t think King would be offended by a venture to the gun range on his birthday. Gun enthusiasts wouldn’t be wishing they had been or acting out in memory of James Earl Ray.
This is just one more Pander Bear moment brought to us the folks who will never be satisfied with their lot in society.
We are going to have to stand up to this eventually.
If we don’t, we’ll have to put up with it throughout eternity.
Today is as good a day as any to start ignoring this nonsense every time it rears it’s disgusting head.
Yeah, because it's been a whole two weeks since we were off for the Holidays.
Wonder if there would have been a fuss if they had Abe Lincoln on a poster for President’s Day?
In a Red County In a Blue State ~ the rednecks around here call our national holiday “James Earl Ray” Day. Not joking...
That’s true too.
My main beef is that we relegated two birthdays to the ash heap, to bring this one into being.
I think the poster with MLK’s name and face on it and “Fun Shoot” is a bad idea. If you disagree, fine.
I thought it was a 742 pump but must confess as an old pistolero, my knowledge of these is a bit sparse. Didn’t see many at the gun shops I worked at/hung around. Just checked, the 740 is the pump, the 760 is the autoloader. We were both in the ballpark... :)
Instead the USAF is going to have a “beat a white prostitute and cheat on your wife day” in keeping with the actions of MLK, Jr.
Now, my idea for an MLK Day “I Have a Dream” sale at Matress World doesn’t seem all that bad.
