"performing a manual reset should help"

Tech support's favorite song. They're hoping you won't call back even if it doesn't work.

It also published a nine-step fix.

Nine steps? The Apollo 13 crew didn't have to do that much work.

Nest, the thermostat of hipsters everywhere. Nest is like Apple or Tesla with legions of company groupies.

I think of this every time I see or read how many different gadgets they put into automobiles.

How many are going to die when the software controlling the car suddenly does something unexpected...like applying the brakes while in the fast lane of a freeway.

Meanwhile, our Honeywell Chronotnerm III is merrily running after 30 years of continuous service, setting the temp down at night, up again when we rise, down when we are at work, and back up again when we return home. No glitches, no software failure, just rock solid reliability. Of course, 90% of owners could never figure out how to program it, so along came Nest for thermostat dummies. Now they are freezing and Nest is going to take weeks to roll out a fix.

I've cautiously begun replacing my old smoke detectors with Nest Protects, as (a) my current detectors are past due for replacement, and (b) there is a new mandate for CO detection that I need to cover. The few conventional all-in-one units I'd seen didn't inspire confidence, although they were much cheaper than the "smart" alternative.

The Protect's build quality seems excellent, although perhaps over-engineered, and I like the part where I can shut the things up without getting a ladder. Also, it's nice that it can give a warning before it goes into full-on alarm mode is nice, as our kitchen hood is a tad wimpy. I've grown to like the adjustable night light feature. I'm not crazy about having a microphone connected to the Internet on every ceiling, however.

I don't see any point in getting the Nest thermostat. But I'm not in snow country, and our household needs aren't exotic.

Ever taken apart an old thermostat? What ever happened to a simple bi-metallic coil switch?

We’re still alive and kicking with our STONE AGE thermostats. Not the end of the world.

Interesting, I was apparently hit by this bug last month. It was strange and no one online seem to know what the issue was. The Nest reported that the battery was too dead to connect to wifi, so I decided to charge it a bit from a USB cable, only about 20 minutes or so, then I plugged it back in, and I reset it. In a few minutes it was as good as new.

I got the Nest because I had the opportunity to buy it at 50% off retail price. At that point, it was an excellent value. I often leave the house for a few days, and wanted a way to set the "away" temperature, and then remotely turn it back up/down via my phone, an hour or so before returning.

Do I like it? Yes, at the price I bought it, it was a no brainer. Am I a huuuuuge fan of it? Do I love it? Worship it? Defend it to the death? F*ck no! Its just a very nice thermostat...
