i am using a borrowed laptop, an hp pavilion g7-1310us Notebook PC, running Windows 7. Last night the screen went black. i have no idea why. powering off and rebooting did nothing. i am thinking there must be some button or command that will turn the screen on. thanks in advance for help. p.s., HELPFUL comments welcome.

That sounds like a loose internal connection. Laptops by their portable nature are subject to vibrations that might work a connector loose. Laptops typically have several ribbon connectors, such as one that connects the screen module to a video controller. If the problem persists, I would ask a repairman to open the laptop and reseat all the connections.

A black screen with a single blinking white cursor in the upper far left of the screen can indicate a memory issue. This seems likely since you are not getting a POST screen that allows you to enter the BIOS setup.Locating and reseating the memory cards/chips may help. You might also try booting from a Windows installation CD and entering the Recovery console. When there, run chkdsk. When that completes, run fixboot.
I would Google those steps to be sure of the process.

....Or you could try grabbing the screen at opposite corners and applying some torque. That might work.

Well it sounds like you confirmed it’s a dead back light on the LCD.
