I’m a second wife and step mother and your comment reminds me of when we were young, fighting for custody of my husband’s 4 year old daughter. The legal bills and the hurtful games with the ex were not fun or funny. At some point my husband bet that if we just paid her, every month, she’d go away! It worked perfectly! She never wanted her daughter, only money, so we paid her for 15 years. And she basically never saw “our daughter” again! It was a gamble we took that was worth everything we paid and more!

For custody, or anything in an international divorce, you need to accept that each party wins in their own country, and then thereafter you will never not fear a kidnap situation. So I fudged the numbers as he wished, and signed away all rights to alimony or much child support. All I wanted was custody and decision making. We were both happy.
