I had lunch with the author in September 1999 when I was on a rail junket with the Amtrak Reform Council to Vancouver. He was the provincial attorney general back then, not the provincial premier, as he was later.

We had lunch at a fine seafood place not far from Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver. (On my last trip there, I found the restaurant was gone.) They wanted one Canadian at each table with the Americans, so by the luck of the draw, I was at a table with some Washington state legislators, and Ujjal was our designated Canadian host.

He was part of the New Democratic Party that had captured the province from the defunct Social Credit Party. He was a fine host, but I found him and his party's belief in socialism to be at best naive. Canada did not experience anything like our Civil War, so they don't have the sense of identity forged in blood that we do. The sense of Canadians being citizens of the world predominates over the idea of a Canadian identity.
